Question about Stiebel Eltron DHC 6-2

1 Answer

My Stiebel-Eltron DHC 6-2 water heater stopped working. I replaced the circuit breaker (40A-burned out), checked the reset switch and checked if the heater was getting voltage (it does). When you open a water faucet you could hear the flow switch click and it actually moves but the heater still doesn't work.

I already removed the cover but I'm not sure how the thermal safety switch is supposed to look like when its been triggered. Besides that, eveything looks normal, no burn marks etc.
    Thanks

Hello,

Per the manual, There is a thermal safety switch located on the side of the heater assembly. You will have to remove the cover of the water heater to access it though.

If the thermal switch resets, but you still don't have hot water, the heater itself is probably burned out.

There is a 3 year warranty on the heater assembly. You should contact the manufacturer (contact info is in the manual) to explore that option.

You likely will not be able to see the reset itself, but probably will only be able to see where you can press on a membrane of sorts to prevent from shocking your finger. Press in where you are supposed to, apply power again. If your water still isn't heated, then next step is to contact manufacturer.

Given that the breaker burned up, I am thinking that your heater assembly is faulted.

That reset button is flush with its housing and when I try to push it in it barely moves. Its only a button, no membrane or anything. This is with the power on or off.

Then the reset button is not tripped. You are looking at a heater problem now. Contact the manufacturer, the info is in manual link. At the least, they should be able to tell you the resistance (in ohms) that you should expect to see when measuring the heating element connections. That will confirm if the heater is dead.

If you use a DMM to measure the resistance of the heater, you should see about 9.5 ohms. The manufacturer would have the exact range, but this will get you headed in the right direction.

How do i fix my stiebel eltron tankless electric water heater? It stop working..

Th easy fix would be installing a new heating element that has burned out. You don't say what size this tankless heater but if it stopped working entirely you might have just one heating element inside. You can test it by (1) turning off the circuit serving the heater, disconnecting one of the wires to the heating element, then taking an ohmmeter to see what the resistance of the element is. If it is "infinity" then it is open and burned out. Replace element. If it is around 6 ohms (for a 10kW heater running at 240V) then the heating element is OK. Unfortunately those heating elements don't last forever. Check the repair manual on how to replace the heating element.

This electric demand water heaters has one heater element. The flow switch turns it on. The thermostat cycles it on and off according to temperature. There is no medium.
You need to run the sink on hot while you take a shower. This kind of cancels out the savings on electricity.
Or get a higher flow shower head. Your screen on the shower head may be partially fouled.
Here is the brochure. It shows the flow rates for the different models.

The paid answerers may have a person who knows your product and the problems associated with your model.
I believe they offer a refund if the 'fix' doesn't work.
The manual might also have troubleshooting.

Each day I see 20-25 unanswered questions about tankless water heaters.
And the day before, there were same number of unanswered questions about tankless products.
The number of questions shows the complexity of the machines, the brand-specific-ness of the problems, and the inability of the manufactures to take care of their customers.
If I understand correctly, the manufacturer will refer you to the installer.
There are not many ways a do-it-yourself-er can fix a tankless.

I had the same problem with the Stiebel Eltron Tempura 24. Right side unit worked (with blinking LED), but the display and left side (including LED) did not work.

This is CRITICAL. Do not take the cover off unless you have turned off circuit breakers at the circuit breaker panel AND tested that there is no power. There is a lot of voltage/ampreage here and it could be life threatening if you get shocked. Call an electrician (or a plumber) if you don't know what you are doing.

My problem was solved by resetting the safety thermal cutout switch on top of the non working unit (red single press thermistor). See this manual http://www.stiebel-eltron-usa.com/pdf/install_tempra.pdf page 8.
