Check your CMOS battery and replaced it on your PC's motherboard, most probably the battery is bad and cannot retain the bios information and your PC can boot up erratically.

Hope it helps.

I have a compaq m2105us and when i start it all i get is two beeps and a resume f1 and start f2

try to press f1 and resume set-up ..and make the changes for teh date and time ..and save all settings with F10 and restart ..it should work ..and load windows if it has one ..The fact that it let you go in bios is good news..it means it is not damaged but if it asks all he time f 1 to resume ..it means the hard disk may have bads on it in system check ..and this is causing the f1 call ... basically the systems tells you that you have a bad hard disk and invites you to change it ..or to press f 1 to go with it anyway ..
so..either is calling you to go to bios and set it ..cause you somehow reset the bios to the factory ..or it is a hard disk notice ..
I f it seam not to find any hard disk in teh system ..try to go to bios by pressing F2 or F10 cause it is a hp after all ..and in there change the settings for the ahci function and let it run ide compatible ..it may be the cause too for not booting up from hard disk ..
In the end I suggest to change bios battery ..cause a flat battery wioll also cause F1 on each boot to confirm the settings and set the date and time ..or just reinstall it cause it may have something on hard disk and caused the lost of data ..
let me know more about this if you can not manage or non of my scenarios does fit to the problem ..

Got a backup?

If not, download a Linux Live CD. Boot your machine with it, save all your data to an external drive and then do a complete disk format and re-install. That will be quicker in the long run.

Not sure about that PC, but on Dell, for example, you hit CTRL-F10 (I think) at power-on and it gives you the option of reinstalling the OS from the recovery partition (wiping any unbacked-up data in the process).,,Gateway is probably similar.

The Boot/BCD issue means your 'Boot Configuration Data' is hosed.

When i boot it always says "hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. command failed press f1 to resume"

this means the hard disks start up self check has failed. press F1 then backup all data from your pc to another drive.

You will then have to replace the drive.

You need to access the BIOS - press F1 or F2 (depending on the version)during the start of the desktop - and in there you must modify the boot order: put the cd first then the had disk second. Save the change, reboot, insert the Vista disk and reboot once more - the disk will be loaded.

you will need a Windows boot disk / Windows install disk / WinXP disk to reboot the PC and install / or repair your OS

rescue disk will not boot your PC
to enable that you need to enter the BIOS, press F1, F2 or Del to enter BIOS , then you need to look for the BOOT seq in BIOS, change that to CD DVD drive as the 1st boot device, Save and Exit and insert the boot CD and restart
this should give you the solution

My laptop is at a black screen that says windows boot manager......under that heading it says that windows failed to start due to a hardware or software change....how do i fix this?

does it offer you the option of pressing F1 to continue?

try that if you can, if its not there, it means the Windows Master Boot Record is broken and needs to be rebuilt.
Windows itself is likely to be ok.
If you have a Windows disk (if you are running Vista, the vista cd, and likewise with Xp, using the XP CD) - start the computer with the CD in the drive, and press any key to boot from CD when offered.
If it doesnt offer this, you need to change your boot order in the BIOS.
the BIOS is the screen right before the screen where you are getting that error.
it is the screen that counts up the RAM, around the Time the PC beeps jsut after turning it on.
there should be a prompt on that screen to get into Setup or BIOS by pressing a key. on Dell machines, it is F12, on IBM is often F2, and on my PC (an ASUS) it is DEL key you press to get into the BIOS.

once in there, you need to find the boot order sequence entry.
ensure the order has CD Rom before the primary hard disk.

save that and boot the PC, hopefully the CD will boot this time . when the CD starts up, you get an option to repair Windows, Install Windows, or enter the Recovery Console.

Press the key (i think it is ' R ') to Select Recovery Console.

once it loads up the DOS screen and is waiting for your input, just ype

FIXMBR

this does assume your Windows installation is sitting on your c:\ partition. refer to the following site if your windows install is NOT on c:\

Press Y to confirm and reboot the PC.

it should now load your copy of Windows.

Microsoft site has an article on the Recovery Console, so please refer to this for more information.

When i start my computer it says press f1 to

This means your hard drive has either failed or is disconnected.

Given the age of the computer it's most likely the drive has failed.

Let me know if there is important data saved on the computer. Otherwise, replace the drive and re-install windows and it should work again.

I have another computer that won't start. the screen says - missing \windows\systems32\config\system use original setup cd rom select r to start repair I tried but it doesn't work

you need bootable windows disk or recovery disk.
Then set first boot device as your cd or dvd rom.
when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios then go to boot option then save settings.
thenh put cd in cd /dvd rom then it boot with disk.
Then it load some file wait for 5-7 minutes then it gives screen then press enter.
then followe the instuction.
