If the compressor is running then it ought to cool. If not shut if down once again wait for few hours and keeping the thermostat in the normal position switch on.
If there is no cooling check if the compressor is working, If the motor speed seems dull check for capacitor being weak, gas pressure being down.
Though it seems strange that a defrosted fridge does not cool and we must suspect the compressor..

Why does my refrigerator keep acting up the freezer gets frosted up then the frig gets warm I have cleaned it underneath unplugged it for 24 hours then plugged it back in it works great for about a w

This problem can have many causes, but generally it is a defrost issue. If the freezer coils are frozen over, they block cold air flow to the refrigerator; and can be caused by different part failures. See the link below for a good explanation of possible failures and for parts. Also, if you turn the refrigerator temp to 0ff and unplug the refrigerator then plug it back in, it should go into defrost mode. Leave it that way for 15 or 20 minutes, then unplug and plug it back in. It may resolve the defrost mode problem. If not you'll need a part, or repair man. Emerson CR500: freezer is cold; refrig is not

If your refrigerator freezer compartment is cold, but the refrigerator compartment is warm--It could be a defrost system problem. When a defrost problem occurs, it is usually the fault of one or more of three basic parts: defrost timer/adaptive defrost control, freezer thermostat or the defrost heater element. See in detail how to dx and fix: Refrigerator Defrost Parts .

The inside of the refrigerator is not staying cold. The freezer does stay cold. How do I fix the inside temperature so it will keep the food cold?

If any part of the automatic defrosting system isn't working, the evaporator will turn into an iceberg and no cold air will circulate into the lower compartment.

Possible causes in that case could be the defrost timer, the defrost thermostat ("bimetal"), the defrost heater, the defrost thermal fuse (if there is one), or the wiring and plugs connecting them.

Removing the back panel of the freezer compartment should reveal the iceberg and allow you to defrost it with a hair dryer or fan. Then you can get at the parts to test them (except the defrost timer, which may be down by the compressor).

I have an Maytag upright freezer.Does it self defrost?if so how does it self defrost?Do you have to leave the plug and hose out all the time? model # is rfu1500aaw

This is not a self defrosting freezer . Remove the plug and hose ONLY when you unplug to defrost . You should defrost when the coils get about 1/4 " of frost (ice) on them . Otherwise , the frost will act like the plastic insulation on electrical wire , not letting the coldness freeze the food solidly .

Frosts up wont get cold MCBR1000S

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

GE Side by Side fresszer frosts up and it doesn't cool properly

possibly you did not defrost enough but other things to check are:
does the fan operate?
maybe the defrost element open circuit or the thermal cutout in series with the element
