Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

5 Answers

Personally I think that Vista OS is far from being a system that should not have been released when it was. I would like to aquire a license for an additional copy of Windows XP Home Edition. I am currently running it on my IBM laptop. I would like to expedite this so I can use my new Gateway machine, model Gateway GT5637E. I could use some direction in doing this.

If you already have the Windows XP Home installation media, there are also instructions on how to purchase just an additional license to install on a 2nd computer.

I am looking to set up an old computer with new memory and hard drive. I have windows vista from my laptop computer can I install this into my newly updated computer and how.

Generally, the licensed software for your laptop is tied to that machine/brand. If you bought a copy of vista and installed it on the laptop, you may be able to install vista on three machines if that is the version you bought.
Most Microsoft programs are locked to one machine and won't activate on another system.
Now, if this is an old, slow (less than 1 Ghz) with less than 2 gigs, it probably will run Vista very slowly if you get it installed. I'd use the OS that was on the old machine instead of trying to install Vista.

My son changed os and was a bad coppie how do i get back my old xp os

This is an easy resolve. You probably will have to reformat your drive (not hard to do.... go to YouTube and type in reformat or format drive and you will find a number of video tutorials are available. Listen to a few of them... take notes... and it should be easy then).

Now, assuming that you owned the OS and that in this case it was a Microsoft OS; 2003, XP, Vista, or 7 (any of theirs), then you can contact them and they will help you for a one time charge (was $35 last time I used this) to resolve. They will send you a new disk (if you have the old one and it was purchased by you). If you don't have the disk and got the computer with the OS as OEM (installed new from manufacturer) then you still can get a replacement from MS (Note: The OS license will be on the side of your PC on the Microsoft decal and that decal has your OEM license number).

The manufacturer may send you a replacement install if you contact them and have a little bit of luck with the draw on the technician that helps you. Tell him or her that this was early on when your son did this and they may be sympathetic with that.,

Another solution: If all fails for you then there is Bit Torrent where you can get almost any OS that exists (for free... along with serial number for install). Always make sure that you keep a copy of your OS and then it is very easy to format the drive and install or you can overwrite the existing for repairs (doesn't always work).

By far the easiest way is to go through Microsoft on the phone (you'll be talking with someone in India but they are determined to resolve any issue you have and provide great service).

I did this myself with an upgrade to Vista Ultimate (It was the Ultimate disaster and was much better off with the Vista Home Premium) and it took some time to resolve even calling Microsoft.

The link below will take you to Dell's download page for your machine. From there you select the Operating System and which drivers you'd like to update. As far as your machine constantly crashing, it's most likely spyware/virus related. For a free scan of your computer (program also fixes virus/spyware problems), click on the 2nd link. I am attempting to find a patch so that I can run my Webster's New World Dictionary & Thesaurus on Windows Vista. This ran great on XP, and I was told there may be a patch for Vista.

by the looks of it there is a 6.3 release of the software that is vista compatable.

You can also call their techs at 1-800-696-0514 to find out if this is a update you can aquire.

I just bought a 4720. Iy has windows vista. I also have an old Toshiba sattelite with windows xp. To connect to the internet the toshiba works every time. The new acer sometimes does but mostly does not....

You will have several problems to install Windows XP in a computer designed to use Vista. I personally don´t think it´s fair.
But your problem possibly is not related with the OS. Are you using a wireless router? If yes, the problem may be your 4720´s wireless adapter (probably internal). You can test it by using another wireless network (most malls, shopping centers, airport or hotels have avaiable public wireless internet access).

Vista is a very demanding OS. Either buy a license or U will have to format UR drive to put XP back on. Vista is NOT an upgrade, it is a 64 bit OS. XP is a 32 bit OS. Like U, I like XP. Been down this road.
