Try pushing the print head carriage with a bit of gentle force. It is getting stuck, and hence the error. You may have to open side and top covers to reach this. Note: this is not the cartridges, but another device that moves back and forth on the slider carriage.

Everything is setup properly and the printer actually attempts to print, but nothing is showing on the paper---the ink carts are full, but I have not used printer in a year

It could be that the nozzles on your cartridges have clogged due to long period of non-usage. Try to follow the steps below to clean the print cartridge nozzles:
Using the computer:
  1. Load plain paper. For help, see Loading paper.
  2. Open the Lexmark Solution Center. On your computer, click Start menu > Programs / All Programs > Lexmark 4300 Series > select Lexmark Solution Center.
  3. From the Maintenance tab, click Clean to fix horizontal streaks.
  4. Click Print. A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles.
  5. Print the document again to verify that print quality has improved. If print quality has not improved, try cleaning the print cartridge nozzles up to two more times.

Using the control panel:
  1. Load plain paper.
  2. Press Menu. The menu appears.
  3. Press the down arrow button until you highlight Clean Cartridge. Press Select.
  4. A nozzle page prints, forcing ink through the nozzles to clean the clogged nozzles.
  5. Print the document again to verify that print quality has improved. If print quality has not improved, try cleaning the print cartridge nozzles up to two more times.

Power went off when I tried to print

Would be helpful to know which operating system you are using and whether there where any warning light flashing. For starters review the following solutions.
Printer Does Not Start or Stops During Print Jobs

Inner Cover was open when you started printing.

Close the Inner Cover and press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer. The printer resumes printing.

Inner Cover was opened while printing is in progress.

Close the Inner Cover and press the RESUME/CANCEL button on the printer.

A page of print data being sent at the time of the error will be erased, so print that page again.

The printer has been printing continuously over a long period.

If the printer has been printing continuously for a long time, the Print Head may overheat. To protect the Print Head, the printer may stop printing at a line break for a period of time and then resume printing.

In this case, interrupt your print session at a convenient time and turn the printer off for at least 15 minutes.

Additionally, if the printer has been printing graphics or photos with intense colors continuously over a period of time, the printer may stop printing to protect the Print Head. In this case, printing will not resume automatically. Turn the printer off for at least 15 minutes.

i_expl.gif Caution

The Print Head and the surrounding area can become extremely hot inside the printer. Never touch the Print Head or nearby components.

Out of paper.

Make sure that paper is loaded in the selected paper source.

Reload paper if no paper is found in the selected paper source (Auto Sheet Feeder or the Cassette).

If the same paper is loaded in the other paper source, you can switch the paper source with the Paper Feed Switch or the printer driver to continue printing.

If both paper sources have run out of paper, confirm the selected paper source and load paper there.

Printing documents with plenty of photographs or illustrations.

When the POWER lamp is flashing green, the printer or the computer is processing data. Printing large data such as photos or graphics takes time for the printer and the computer to process, during which the printer may appear to have stopped operating.

In addition, when printing data that uses a large amount of ink continuously on plain paper, the printer may pause temporarily. In either case, wait until the process is complete.

i_note.gif Note

If you are printing a document with a large printing area or printing multiple copies of a document, printing may pause to allow the ink to dry.

Paper won't feed through printer. (Lexmark X2690). Can't see anything stuck in printer. Paper won't go down past rollers, but I can't see down inside etc

Loading paper and original documents
1. Make sure:
• You use paper designed for inkjet printers.
• If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper, you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the printable side, see the instructions that came with the paper.)
• The paper is not used or damaged.
• If you are using specialty paper, you follow the instructions that came with it.
• You do not force paper into the printer.

2. Before loading paper the first time, slide the paper guides out toward the edges of the paper support.
3. Load the paper vertically in the center of the paper support, and adjust the paper guides to rest against the edges of the paper.

Sir when we take copy it rotate auto mat by 180 deg what i have to do

On this machine either the paper is loaded wrong, or the settings in the machine menu are set to landscape or portrit. This is either in the machine or from the computer one is printing from. If it is from the computer check the printer settings. On Micro-Word, check the printer settings.
To test the machine, just load paper in one tray and remove all other paper from the other trays.
Run a copy using the glass only, not the document feeder.
If it copies good, then try running a documents from the document feeder in the same exact way the paper is loaded in the tray.
Check the paper trays menu to see how they are set up to print.
Good luck.

Printer will not kick out document automatically, attention lite keeps flashing. tray 2 selected but always defaults back to tray 1

Sounds like you have a mismatch in the paper you are trying to print on and the paper that is loaded in the printer. HP printers look to feed paper from tray 1 anytime the computer settings don't match the paper loaded in tray 2. Tray 1 is the multi purpose tray and prety much any size paper can be loaded in tray 1. Double check your document settings and double check the paper size loaded in the paper tray 2 and make sure they match. Also try printing a different document to see if the error persists. If it does this on everything you try to print you should also double check teh rear guide in the paper tray. There is a rear guide in paper tray 2. If it slides back too far it will make the printer think that paper longer than 8 1/2 x 11 is loaded. Push the paper all the way forward in the tray and push the rear guide until it is snug with the tail end of the paper stack.

Dell 3000cn keep getting load mpf when i try to print but there is paper in the tray. how do I get it to recognize the paper. I've changed nothing on the computer but this just started to happen! please...

I have a Dell 3010n myself, and a few times I did run into that "Load MPF" issue.
1.) Before printing a document, please check and see the properties. i.e. Kind/type of paper, which tray, or if printing envelopes or any other document than a regular 8 x11 paper. Putting all the tray and paper type selection on "Auto" can be very helpful.
2.) On the printer itself, there is a menu button where you can configure the type of paper, i.e. regular 20 llb. copy/print paper, glossy photopaper, thicker paper - after you place a fresh load on the paper tray and slide it in, usually it will ask you which type of paper you just loaded. Make sure it is the same settings as the document that you are trying to print: i.e. if document settings on computer was set to print on photopaper and you have regular paper on the tray, the printer will do a "Load MPF".
The paper sensor on it is amazingly (for a Dell, that is) sensitive and it can differentiate across a lot of paper types/thickness. If you have several computers and user across a network, and there are several paper-type settings done on the printer itself, this "Load MPF" issue will present itself more often.
In my case, it's simply because the person who recently changed the paper-type to glossy cover paper from some user who previously printed to a transparency forgot to revert MPF/Tray 1 to regular copy/print paper. Most cases, the printer setting on the PC has been left to print on to a transparency by default, so even if I stack the tray with copy paper to the hilt, it still will do "Load MPF".
