I hold the tub clean button down for 3 seconds but it doesn't activate. What am I doing wrong?

I do exactly that. It just doesn't activate. Other extra options seem to work, though, like the Spinsense.

Same problem with 10 day old lg washer wm24555wg. Tried unplugging etc. still the tub clean doesn't work.. the light doesn't come on only the pre-wash and child lock. Lg and repair say this is normal... I don't believe it. ..it should light up and say add bleach. Please help.

  • pabpitts Jun 26, 2008

I finally just washed some old towels with bleach and left the door open for a while. That and drying the door and seals and cleaning the filter seem to do the trick. Still, it bothers me that there's something wrong with my machine. I love everything else about it!

  • Jody Dalton Jun 28, 2008

I have the same prob. I've only had my washer a month and it has never worked. I thought I was doing it wrong. I'm so glad I found this site!!

  • pabpitts Jul 30, 2008

I got all excited because I keep the Spinsense on but even after I turned it off I still can't get the tubclean on. Do you press the button before or after pressing start? I've actually tried both but no luck! I'll just keep washing towels with bleach. It works fine that way.

  • heatherlt11 Oct 05, 2008

My tubclean cycle also doesn't work, but neither does my spinsense button. When I called LG about the spinsense problem, they sent out a repairman who told me that on the newer models that the spinsense option is permanently on. So, if the spinsense option has to be turned off in order for the tubclean to work then of course my tubclean isn't going to work. I am going to call their service number and find out what the deal is. I am very frustrated because other than this, I have really loved this washer.

  • pabpitts Oct 07, 2008

Thanks so much to everyone who has responded. This weekend I must have been holding my mouth right, but I turned off Spinsense and held the tub clean button and it worked!  I had to run find my bleach! I will keep all the suggestions handy so that I can make it work again. If all else fails I put a load of old towels in and alot of bleach and wash them. It seems to clean everything pretty well. Thanks Fixya! you are a great site!

  • Mu123 Jan 04, 2009

I have the same problem and i can't even turn off the spinsense option. Its like a default option and is on in whatever cycle i select. i bought this machine for the tub clean option which i couldn't find it in the maytag one that i liked which was much cheaper than this, I tried calling the LG guys but they just didn't reply back.

  • Jody Dalton Feb 12, 2009

I have had my main board replaced in my washer twice now for the tub clean cycle not working. My spin sense button doesn 't work either and never has. After the first replacement, the tub clean did work for a short time. After the last replacement the repairman didn't even test it before he left. Now he is just ignoring me altogether.

I went in and talked to Home Depot and apparently they have a lemon law. Three times for same repair and you get a new machine. That's the phone call I'm making today. Man they are frustrating. To pay that much money for sub-standard appliances, and then be treated with such terrible customer service is ridiculous.

As a side note, I also made the mistake of buying a french door refrigerator by LG. It made approximately 6 batches of ice and croaked. That was a year and a half ago. I have had 4 service calls on that one and still no ice. LG=Large piece of Garbage!!!

  • Slider777 Mar 01, 2009

I have the same problem as all of you with the broken Tub Clean if SpinSense is enabled.

Also, sometimes SpinSense gets stuck on and the only way to get it to turn off is to reset the machine by doing a 1 hour unplug and then "hold power button" while plugging it in. Even then, I still sometimes have to manually turn off SpinSense.

Note that SpinSense can only be turned on and off while a wash program is running. It can't be controlled any other time.

Another VERY annoying problem we are having is sometimes the bleach dispenser doesn't work and the bleach is left to be used in the NEXT load. This bleach issue seems random and I haven't figured out what causes it. It seems to only happen to washes where we've paused it to add extra clothes, but it doesn't always happen when we do.

Other than these relatively major issues, I am extremely pleased with our LG 2688. It does such an incredible job at cleaning I'm torn as to if I'm willing to deal with these issues.

Thanks to a couple of previous responders, 6 months of frustration has now ended - I can now run the Tub Clean on my LG Steam Washer! I first want to say that it is important not to get excited and start pushing buttons randomly, as I think I had been doing for all these months when I couldn't get Tub Clean to work by pushing the button in for 3 seconds. Just do the following, which combines and expands on a couple of previous responses:

1. I had to deactivate the Spin Sense, and if your Spin Sense is ON, you will have to do this too. (It is ON if the spin speed light flashes while any of the wash cycles is in progress. If spin speed button does not flash while a wash cycle is in progress, the Spin Sense is already off.) So how to deactivate Spin Sense? Select Speed Wash, and start the cycle. Let it run for about 20 seconds and THEN push and HOLD IN in the Spin Sense option button for 3 seconds. The blinking spin speed button will stop blinking and you will then know that the Spin Sense is OFF.

2. Once Spin Sense is off: Start with your machine turned off. Then push the power button on and select the RINSE AND SPIN option button. Then START the Rinse and Spin cycle. Let it run for about 5 seconds and then PUSH IN AND HOLD THE TUB CLEAN OPTION BUTTON FOR 3 SECONDS. You will then see the little LED light panel show something that looks like tcl. And you are there! Just leave it alone .... the LED will change to one hour and 25 minutes. And it will clean your machine just great.

3. Don't forget to put your bleach in the detergent cup before you start all of this.

I want to thank the two responders above who gave me the essential features for this fix. I forgot to make a note of their names before I started this response, but you can see who they are. I am so excited. Now EVERYTHING works on my LG Steam Washing Machine. I love this machine. It is a miracle of cleaning, especially since I own 4 large breed dogs and am washing and sanitizing large hairy and smelly bedding each and every day. And I no longer have to iron anything - I just use the steam cycle to unwrinkle our clothes. Best washer I have ever owned (and I have owned another major brand of large capacity front loading washer before - no comparison).

I have had an lg steam washer for a while now and tub clean has not worked for a very long time. Called service and it was no help they said they would have to send some one out but that didn't works. I have been cleaning tub on sanitary and hoping for the best. But thanks to this post and all the posts I was able to fix it after a year of no tub clean I am running the cycle now. I have seen the speed light blinking in the past but never put two and two together so thanks a ton to all who posted here

Wow! I thought I was the only one with this problem. I've had my washers a few moths & the tub clean button worked great ... until last week. Now it doesn't work anymore. We're calling a repair man tomorrow. I've loved my machine, but now this ....

I figured out why my Tub Clean wasn't working ... I discovered that the Spinsense option has to be turned off in order forthe Tub Clean option to work! We cancelled the repair man's appointment. I hope this is a solution for others with this problem!

A repairman stumbled onto this - to get the tubclean cycle to work. First select "rinse and spin," then press "tubclean" for 3-5 seconds. Too bad they couldn't just have put that in the manual!!!!

I'm so glad my washer isn't broken, I love it. I just wish the manual would have been updated for my model.

One more thing that might help all of you. Even though the spinsense button doesn't activate the spinsense function, the button still needs to be "turned off." This can only be done when the washer is running a cycle. So if the tubclean cycle doesn't work, try turning on the washer - any cycle, it doesn't matter - then hold down the spinsense button for 3 seconds. You should hear a double beep.
Then, turn off the cycle and try to activate the tubclean cycle again. Make sure you press the rinse and spin button before you try to activate the tubclean function. Good luck!

My machine is model # WM0642H (the front loader with the rear controls). I have had the same problem with Tub Clean and Spinsense. I've had the washer for one month, but never have been able to get the Tub Clean nor the Spinsense functions to work. With either button, when I press it for 2 seconds or so, it beeps twice and nothing happens.

Today, I tried pressing the Extra Rinse (Tub Clean) button and kept pressing it to see what would happen. After about 2 second, the two beeps sounded. Several moments after that, the PreWash option lit up and the digital display read "bcL" (only the circle part of the "b" was open like a "c") (at this point, I released the button). So I pressed the knob to start the cycle, and the "bcL" was replaced by "1:27", and the machine started doing something - the Tub Clean cycle I presume. No other cycle options were lit - just the Beeper sound level was lit.

I chatted live with someone on their website. All she could parrot back to me were the same instructions that are printed in the manual and that are on the website. The one extra bit of info she did give me was that the PreWash Cycle should be activated when you start Tub Clean. I told her about the "bcL" message, but she said she was unfamiliar with that message.

Still don't know about the Spinsense; I'm going to try holding that button for as long as I have to to see what happens.

Having had three frontloading washers and matching dryer units (Maytag Neptune, Kenmore Elite and LG Steam), I have run into what seems like every problem on the planet.

For Mmache, I would highly discourage you from buying a Kenmore - at least from the Elite series. I purchased a Kenmore Elite washer and dryer (like what you see on Extreme Makeover Home Edition) only to have it tearing holes in my clothes. Only after six service visits, numerous comments on behalf of the service repair man ("you are overloading it" and "you don't know how to run this maching") and threatening legal action did Sears finally declare our unit a lemon and allow us to select a different unit. It was at this point we got our LG steam washer and dryer unit.

I have been very pleased with my LG pair and have had no issues with it that weren't easily (i.e. NO repair man!) remedied. Knowing a few tricks like leaving the door open after the last load, turning off the Spinsense feature to make the Tub Clean feature work and periodically following the instructions in the booklet about emptying the drain pump filter have done the trick in keeping our laundry fresh and my husband's "I told you so" comments out of our life!

I  was not able to activate spinsense or start the tub clean cycle. I called LG and they had me reset the washer. This is accomplished by first unplugging the washer then pressing and holding the power button for aprx 30-60 seconds before plugging it back in. After that I held down the button for tub clean and the prewash button lit up and the machine started the tub clean cycle which is aprx 1.5hrs long. I was told that the tube clean button would not actually light up for this cycle.

On our unit:
1. Turn on the washer.
2. Press the Spin+Rinse button once
3. Press and hold for at least 3 seconds the Tub Clean button
4. In the display the abbreviation for Tube Clean will be in the display.
4. Press and start the cycle.

Hope this helped, took me a while to figure it out.

I have the same problem. I've had three washers delivered with the same issue. In each instance the tub clean cycle is activated by me while the delivery crew is present. After a couple of washing cycles it then becomes impossible to activate it.
I've had Sears service out to verify the problem, but they have no solution. After the second washer was delivered, service did order a new control board. We gave up after waiting 6 weeks for the part and had them deliver another washer today. This new washer has the same problem. Also, I called LG direct and they claim they are unaware of this problem.
Sears did give us the option of selecting another brand and we are seriously thinking about switching to a Whirlpool or Kenmore.

My LG washer doesn't say to add bleach as far as I can tell, but when I press and hold the tub clean button for three seconds, the displays says "tubCL". Then I just add the bleach and press the start button.

I have not heard of this problem before, the only thing I can suggest is to follow the instructions set out by the manufacturer. Close the door, turn unit on, press and hold tub clean. Display should show display message to add bleach, press start and it should run. If it still doesn't work let me know and I will research it further.

The only thing I can think of than is maybe the button is not contacting the board or the board itself is bad. I have never come across this issue before as I stated previously.

You need to turn "off" the "spinsense" feature before you can successfully activate the 'tub clean' cycle.LG won't tell you this.Just make sure you turn it back "on" after you are done,as you probably turned it on for a good reason.

I've tried all suggestions from other posts but still can't get Tub Clean Function to work.

Only suggestion I have is to try these old reset solution that work on some older lg washers: unplugg and wait 5 minutes or so, or unplug an d hold power button for 15 seconds, or unplug and the plug back in holding power button down for about 15 seconds then release. Good luck. (LG makes great products but their customer service and repair are horrible).

Power to machine but will not start a cycle

If child lock has been activated, all buttons on the control panel except for the power button will be inoperable. Child lock is usually activated by pressing either the [pre-wash] or [tub clean] button for 3 seconds. To deactivate the child lock function, press and hold the same key again for 3 seconds.
Try switching the machine off by pressing the on/off button. Press the same button after a few seconds to restart the machine.

to deactivate the child lock, set program to Easy-Care and hold option down arrow for 5 seconds. If still it does not get unlocked then Try pressing "dry" & "spin" together for 10 seconds or until the CL disappears. Also try pressing "end of cycle" for over 5 seconds. If this doesn't work then try pressing "options & select" till the light goes off. Also try and press ECO and rapid buttons together for more than 10 seconds.
IF IT IS LIKE MY 5202 YOU HAVE TO PRESS AND HOLD THE UNLOCK BUTTON FOR LIKE 3 SECONDS. THIS PREVENTS SOMEONE FROM JUST PRESSING THE BUTTON AND ACTIVATING THE LOCK . TRY THE PRESS AND HOLD METHOD

It flashes up CL please could you tell me what that means

It might be the Child Lock is active. If this is the case all of the buttons except power will be inoperable. One button (often Tub clean or Pre-wash) have the phrase, child lock, written below the main feature in a much smaller font. Press and hold this button for 3 seconds and see if the error goes away.

I hope this helps.

1 Answer

What does LF mean?

It is a long fill error. It flashes when the machine control board detected no change in the water level or the water level is not reached in a certain period of time during the fill cycle. Water is probably not entering the tub due to the water inlet valve not functioning or water enters the tub but not properly due to clogged fill hose screens.

Press the Pause/Cancel button to clear the error on the display. Remove the fill hoses from the water inlet valve assembly at the back of the machine and check the screens. Clean the screens and replace it if necessary. Make sure that the water supply valve is open and water is present.

Put the machine in standby mode (only the Clothes Clean indicator is on) and activate the Manual Diagnostic Test Mode to check the operation of the water inlet valve.
  1. Select any one button except Power, Stop, and Stop.
  2. Press and hold the button for 3 seconds-->Release the button for 3 seconds--> Press and hold the button for 3 seconds-->Release the button for 3 seconds--> Press and hold the button for 3 seconds
  3. Press the same button when all indicators on the console are illuminated and "88" is displayed on the Estimated Time Remaining display. A single beep sounds and display shows the two digit console ID number for 3 seconds. The displayed ID number will change to "00" and the Add a Garment indicator will flash.
  4. Select Whitest Whites cycle.
  5. Press Start>Wash/Rinse Temp. The water inlet valve should turn on and fill the tub according to the Wash/Rinse Temp selection.
  6. Press Start to turn off the valve.
  7. Press Stop or Power button to exit diagnostic test mode.

Yes, it's normal. It is a safety feature because of the hot water used during the tub clean cycle. It prevents the machine from opening while the tub clean cycle is in process.

Push and hold Stain Cycle button for 3 seconds to cancel spinsense. Then, turn off machine. When you power it back on, press "Extra Rinse" for 3 seconds and push the START button.

When cleaning tub, do NOT use detergent--only use liquid chlorine bleach.
