ND-6650A Drive

I have a Dell XPS M140 with aND-6650A NEC RW+- Drive.
Off late it detects some CD and DVD's and sometimes does not detect at all. Also the writing speed has diminished and the system is unable to detect the burnt Cd or DVD contents after burning but the same CD or DVD works fine in other systems.

Many people say that in Laptops if the RW drive is working erratically then it must be replaced or should use an external optical drive.Kindly advice.
