Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Our computer has stopped recognizing our mybook essential 1 TB....also the lights dont all show up

    I tried all those things and still have the problem......I was told by Western Digital that if I send it in for repairs I would loose all my data, which is very upsetting due to having over 6000 photos on it being mostly my daughter of 18months now. I certainly can not afford to have the data recovered since it starts at $1000. So are you saying it could be repaired without loosing all the data????

Base from the description of your problem this issue has something to do with the actual hard drive , but we can also try some things here.
First connect the drive on different USB port on your computer if possible try to connect it on different computer and see if it will be recognized.
But if still not being recognize try a different USB cable because sometimes the problem can be with the cable.
After doing those and still same problem the external drive needs servicing for you to be able to retrieve the data and the drive itself , you can take it to a service center or send it back to Western Digital.

    Yes that is possible to have it repair and data will still be there, because sometimes the problem here is the hard drive enclosure not the actual drive, if you can take it to a computer repair near your area they can take the drive out and put it on a different enclosure so you can use it again.

The issue might be due to plug and play Drivers of the External Hard Drive.

My Western Digital 1 TB mybook essential 2.0 turns on and blinks but then is not read by my computer. Not even when I go to manage my computer.


Connect it to a different computer.
If it still is not recognized, then either:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the casing has failed,
* the disk-drive inside the casing has failed.

If the former, open the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive to a desktop computer, to see if the drive itself is OK.

Windows XP/My Book Essential 1 TB Recognition Problems


Fact is, unfortunately they're right - you shouldn't need any special driver for the MyBook, it's basic USB storage and XP should be able to use it without problems.

Apparently Windows is recognizing it as something else. Try booting in Safe Mode and checking hardware devices, uninstalling any Western Digital related stuff. Then, reboot the PC and power up the unconnected MyBook and wait a couple of minutes for it to stabilize, then connect it.

Check it also on another PC, just to be sure it does work.

The essential edition is a single drive unit. if you have another computer you could pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to retrieve your data. I use an external usb 2.0 to IDE/Sata adapter that connects to the drive and the PC. These can be found online for $10.00-$15.00. This adapter has saved me many times in the past. The other option is to connect the MyBook to another computer (Mac or PC) and see if that computer will read the drive correctly or not.

Its not showing up as a driver when i plug it in. the computer recognize a usb device has been plugged in by giving the little connected sound but the mass storage device doesnt show up. ive tried it on...


This is a bad sign.

If this occurs... try it on another computer. It may be that the drive has failed internally... If you leave them plugged in... they will last only 2 to 3 years at most.

Western Digital drive disappears


i heard that it must be installed under SATA 3 or 4 and only the c drive or system drives are to be under SATA 1 and 2. You change this in the BIOS i think.

When you drop your hard drive for more than a few inches, you just have to face the fact that the HD is dead, period. If for some miracle the drive still works, then it's the work of Jesus/Shiva/whatever deity of your choice. I'm sorry I can't offer anything more constructive. See Myth 24 on this page:

WD My Book Essential -- Can't find drivers


It should not really need drivers in Win2K or Vista, you might have a problem with your USB drivers. Go into device manager, remove any devices under the USB heading and reboot. All the drivers should reinstall and hopefully your MyBook will come alive again. Otherwise, try the MyBook on a friend's computer, if it doesn't work there then the MyBook may be faulty itself.

MyBook Fell Over, Now Not Showing As A Drive Letter


Well if your drive is 6 months old you might have a warranty of 1 year. You can make an online RMA request and tell them the drive doesn't work anymore. You don't have to say you dropped it. Just say it's heavily used and you can almost not live without.

But on the other hand if you tell the truth and want it fixed they can be reasonable and repair it for free. From my work and my private experience with WD they have good service. We sent alot of hdd's as RMA. For them is also good commercial if you tell other people about their service.
