This can be a few different problems
1) one the simplest is a loose video cable beween the mother board and the LCD.
2) bad inverter or back light if in a split system mostly on some wide screen models.
3) a bad display

Sometimes when I start my HP pavillion dv5 2135dx laptop the screen is dark even though the computer is up and running. It may take several shutdowns and startups for the screen to finally come on. Other...

If you can very vaguely see the icons or pictures displayed on the screen even though dark it maybe either a problem with your inverter or Lcd backlight. If no images are seen even though you look carefully then it may be the onboard vga controller. It maybe worth checking to see if your laptop is under warranty with Hp see link.

Is it possible for me to remover the on board screen of my laptop(MX 6956) in order to use the keyboard and HD with an external monitor?

You don't need to remove the LCD screen.

1) Laptop off connect the external monitor's VGA cable, to the VGA port (Connector) on the back of the laptop.
The VGA port looks like this,

2) Turn on the laptop.

3) Plug the external monitor into power. Windows will recognize it as an new hardware device.
Windows will search through it's database of Drivers, and match one up.
However, if you have the installation disk that comes with the monitor, install it now.
Load the software.

(The monitor's Installation Disk (CD) has the proper drivers. It will set the resolution settings at the correct resolution for the monitor. If you do not have the Installation Disk, download the drivers from the monitor's manufacturer website)

4) Once the drivers are installed immediately Right-click on an empty area of your desktop screen.
Left-click on Properties.

5) Now Left-click on the Settings tab.

6) You will see two rectangular shaped icons. One icon has a 1 in it, the other icon has a 2 in it.
The icon with a 1 in it represents your Primary monitor.
The laptop's LCD screen.

The icon with a 2 in it represents your Secondary monitor.
The external monitor you just hooked up.

Right-click on the 2 icon, then left-click on Attached.
Go to the bottom Right, and left-click on Apply.
Now go to the bottom Left, and left-click on OK.

Only left side where can see start only of the screen it's ok the rest is blank and vertical line.

1. Your issue could be several things here
a. The ribbon cable to the LCD screen is not attached securely to the board internally.
2. You have a malfunction video card also internal to the mother board
3. the luminous tube or inverter ( internal ) has gone bad and need repair.

Startup fails to complete properly

When on the screen, and you have no icons hold control(ctrl) down and shift key and press escape(esc) your windows task manager should appear, goto the applications tab, at the bottom goto the tab New Task and left click, another window should appear with a text bar, type in the text bar explorer.exe and click ok, all the icons and your normal screen should reapear.

If your screen goes back to normal goto the start bar and goto run or search and type "regedit".
When the regedit window appears left click the " + " sign next to Hkey_local_mechine the the plus sign on software, scroll down to Microsoft folder and click the plus sign, scroll down to Windows nt folder and click the plus sign, the plus sign on Current version folder, then scroll down to winlogon folder and left click on the folder icon, on the right hand side of the screen look for "shell" double click on the icon and delete everything in the text bar and type explorer.exe and click ok and exit out of the window, restart the pc and everything should be back to normal.

pls post back and tell me what happens.cheers.

Thin and wide white lines on screen

Yes, your screen most likely is going bad, the only other reason for lines and distortion is a loose data cable that runs up the back of the lcd panel on the left side. For the touchpad, go to the control panel > Mouse > look at the top of the window and look for the device properties. open this tab and look for your touchpad listed. Highlight it and click on the settings button. Go through these settings and make sure that tapping is enabled. Even if it is, you may consider updating the drivers for the touchpad.

I have a Compaq v 5000 and the screen colors are the opossite of what they should be, is it the LCD, graphics card ( dont even know if there is one, not computer literate), or is it the mother board? It is...

OK... there's a few things that can cause this....

First... You need to look at your display settings... Open the control panel and click on Display Icon. (might need to set to classic view to view your control panel icons)....
Once there... Click on the Settings Tab, and make sure your color is set to 32bit and screen size is at least 1024x768..

If All Is Set Correctly There...

If Able To.... Connect A Desktop Monitor To The Laptops VGA OutPut Serial Port....Power Laptop On And See If Same Symptoms Occur On The External Screen....

If The Same Thing Is Happening On External Screen, THen You're Having Video Issues/ which means your video chip is failing/overheating..which would mean either a motherboard replacement or a graphics/gpu chip reflow....

Also... A Failing LCD Bulb Can Cause Similar Symptoms...
Though when a LCD Bulb Starts to Fail It Will Usually Omit Pastel Colors To The Whole Screen...Pinks, Oranges.. etc....

New browser windows open to the right of the previous one.

Instead of opening a new IE browser for each site, try using the Tabs at the top (blank square next to the Website title). (see below)
You can also Right-Click on links on web pages and select "Open Link in New Tab". This should also help your computer run better as opening new browser windows uses more memory.

Laptop computer connected to projector.

When the projector displays the background image and the lcd displays the desktop as normal you can drag the open windows to the left or right and display them on the projector. it sounds like this laptop has an internal video card. If you right click on the desktop it might give you options to configure the display settings for the video card. Not sure how you will get to it if it does not show up on the right click menu. Probably through the start menu or in the control panel there should be somewhere to change the settings for the video card. This will no be under the display settings though.

But once you find your dual display options you will be able to change it to make both displays the same

Stupid blank screen on my Craptop

Could be a simple video driver problem, try starting up your laptop in safe mode (Pressing F8 on boot up). If and when screen comes up highlight 'Start Windows in Safe Mode' Next a list of startup drivers etc will stream down the screen and tell you you are starting in safe mode, allow this. If your lcd screen stays on then it's a driver problem, go to add/remove programmes and uninstall driver the driver and restart your laptop. This should then start in VGA mode all icons will be bigger than normal. Either re-install video drivers from setup/restore disk or go to laptops manufacturer website to download drivers. If no screen even in safe mode LCD probably dead. Please rate solution.
