Your router is broadcasting at 150mbps. That doesn't mean that your speed will be 150mbps. 150mbps is the maximum speed your router will broadcast, 13mbps is your internet connection speed.

Top Tips to increase bittorent download Speed

The latest file sharing protocol bittorrent has modified everything when it comes to file sharing. It is a nice platform for downloading large files. Sharing of files include movies, iso images and MP3 songs. Bittorent is mainly famous for illegal file sharing .
The Bittorrent system can be slow at times due to heavy traffic. so let us tweak bittorrent sharing program a little bit.
There are a lot of different bittorrent clients that you can download. I think the best are BitCommet and uTorrent. Here is a few tips to speed up uTorrent Client. Similar can be implemented on any other torrent clients ,which you are using.

Step 1: Increase TCP connections
You need to increase the number of TCP connections that are allowed at max.Windows XP Service Pack 2 came with the number of allowed open connections to 10. This is to stop any piece of spyware(in our case bittorent client even) from totally taking over your internet connection. TCP connection allowed should be 50 for optimal performance. The best way to increase the maximum number of connections is to apply patch that is available at www.lvllord.de. A nice way to fix this is to download this patch .
The little tweak to the torrent client works great in certain times. If you’re using uTorrent go to Options menu then Preferences. In the Preferences go the Advanced Options. In the advanced options change the net.max_halfopen connections to 80. In the same section change the max half open tcp connections to 80. Once your done click on OK and you are all set. This tweak will let the maximum TCP connection available for the bittorrent client. Now start downloading you’ll realize a little difference in the download speed. Port forwarding technique is more effective than this.
A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).
If there are a lot of daily occurrences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spy ware…

Step 2:Torrent Client Configuration
In order to apply these tips you must know your maximum up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing).
Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.
1. Maximum upload speed

Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.
Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…
80% of your maximum upload speed
so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s But keep seeding!

My network card is only allowing 54mbps , I have 1.5gig dsl with a 300mbps router Do i need a new network card the driver is updated to last update

Your wireless network card is more than sufficient to handle the bandwidth provided by your DSL connection. A "1.5" DSL connection refers to a 1.5Mbps DSL line. Your network card is an 802.11G network card. Simply put, your network card will only run at a maximum of 54Mbps, far short of your 802.11N router's maximum speed, but provides more than enough room for the bandwidth provided by your Internet Service Provider. Gigabit connections (connections with speeds measured in 'Gbps') are almost exclusively for private networks or corporate networks with Fiber Optic connections.

In layman's terms, you can get a newer network card for your computer that will improve the speeds between your laptop and any other computers on your network, but as long as your network card is supported by any modern operating system, odds are it is able to transfer data fast enough to keep up with your DSL connection

100mbps on my house computer but only 54 on my laptop

100mbps is just the maximum speed capacity that can be used and depends on the speed that you subscribed so it doesn't mean you'll get a sharp 100 mbps on that.

I just installed d-link wbr-1310. I am getting 1/4 the speed using wireless. Are there any setting I change to resolve this.

Wireless connections are running on a slower speed by definition.

A wired connection with this router sets the maximum speed at 100 Mbps.

A wireless signal in a 802.11b network has a maximum speed of 11 Mbps, and a 802.11g network has a maximum speed of 54 Mbps.

These numbers are theoretical numbers and never achieved in reality. (like a Toyota Prius makes 60mpg...)

So depending on your wireless network adapter and how your setup physically looks like (distance to the router, interference with telephones, microwaves etc.) it is absolutely possible that you wireless speed is considerably slower than your wired connection.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I have 20mb broadband but only 300kbs download speed

I personally have never known that changing the MTU setting can speed up your connection, as the MTU is the maximum transmition units that is sent to your pc from each web site and if the MTU setting is incorrect then some web sites will not load on your explorer page, the speed at which you download the page will not make any difference.

If you are supposed to get 20MB speed then you must be on cable and not ADSL as ADSL is a max of 8MB, so i would ring up Virgin or whoever and check the speed you should really be getting.

See these details posted on the netgear site, and you'll notice there is no mention of speed:-

Details About MTU
A packet sent to a device larger than its MTU is broken into pieces. Ideally, MTU would be set to the same — large — value on all your computers, routers and switches, as well as on all the parts of the Internet that you access. But you cannot control the MTU on the Internet, and in practice the optimum MTU size on your LAN is related to your hardware, software, wireless interference, etc.
  • Tweaking MTU size may work well in one situation, but cause performance and connection problems in others.
  • When network devices with different MTU settings communicate, packets are fragmented to accommodate the one with the smallest MTU.
  • Windows XP sets MTU automatically, that is, it optimizes computer MTU for you. This Microsoft article explains resolving lack of connection to a broadband ISP using Windows XP: How-To Configure Broadband Connections Using PPPoE.
  • Once a network device fragments a packet, the data stays fragmented until arriving at the destination computer.
Setting MTU size is a process of trial-and-error: start with the maximum value of 1500, then reduce the size until the problem goes away. Using one of these values is likely to solve problems caused by MTU size:
  • 1500. The largest Ethernet packet size; it is also the default value. This is the typical setting for non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections. The default value for NETGEAR routers, adapters and switches.
  • 1492. The size PPPoE prefers.
  • 1472. Maximum size to use for pinging. (Bigger packets are fragmented.)
  • 1468. The size DHCP prefers.
  • 1460. Usable by AOL if you don't have large email attachments, etc.
  • 1430. The size VPN and PPTP prefer.
  • 1400. Maximum size for AOL DSL.
  • 576. Typical value to connect to dial-up ISPs.

Connection speed

the usual maximum speed for a v92 dial up modem is around 48-52kbps, although sometimes the way windows calculates the speed can be different, showing higher speeds than is actually possible, hence the 115k that shows when connected. The only way you can get faster download speeds is to download the 'Onspeed' software which compresses pictures etc to enable twice the download speed.
