Typewritter won't correct!

We have an IBM Selectric II Typewritter that will not correct. When you press the correction key it goes back but the typewritter ball and correction ribbon don't engage at all. They correction key is merely acting as a backspace key. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

After you press the corr. key you must retype the wrong letter then type the correct letter.

My IBM Selectric II typewriter skips part of a letter when typing envelopes and going over the overlapped thickness. Even repeating the letter doesn't help.

That particular key is not hitting the paper flush as it should. Carefully try adjusting it in the direction of the miss.

How do I remove and replace the tab set/clear button on an IBM correcting selectric II typewriter

Yes, all the keys are snap on. Use a spring hook on top and bottom of the key and wiggle (carefully) upwards to remove. (If you don't have spring hooks, then hefty paper clips will do. Create a 90 degree or better bend on the end of the clip)

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

I have a IBM Correcting Selectric II and I'm having trouble clearing out the margins. Can you help?

space to the right side of the machine, hold down the tab clear key and hit return.

If the carriage stops partway back, one of the tab stops has rotated too far on the tab bar.

remove the platen and paper pan, go to the stuck stop, rotate it to the rear of the machine to line up with the other tabs

IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

IBM Correcting Selectric II; correction ribbon frozen in front of typing ribbon.

Move the grey lever on the R. side of the carrier to the R. and remove correction tape, try the machine, if it seems to work OK install a new correction tape.

IBM Correcting selctric II keys are jammed

It sounds like the cycle shaft is not fully in home
position. With the machine OFF, try to turn the print shaft (the steel shaft with the single groove that goes through the carriage) top towards the back of the machine. Then turn the machine on. Try the space bar first. If it works, your machine probably needs the cycle clutch spring adjusted or replaced.

Correcting IBM Selectric II Typewritter correcton ribbon won't engage

Selectric I and II type elements are identical (88 char) where Selectric III uses a different element (96 char). The 88 character element will have white lettering and the 96 character element will have yellow. Directly underneath the lift-up tab to remove the element will be a 3-digit number. That's the last 3 digits of the element's part number, which will be preceeded by 1167 for 88 character, or 1352 or 96 character. For example, if you have a '052" stamped on the element, and it's an 88 character style, the P/N will be 1167052.

The correcting mechanism is an intricate additional function of the backspace function. To test it/adjust it/or repair it requires the machine be hand-cycled using a hand cycle wheel which is screwed into the right hand side operational shaft. It's unlikely that an un-trained party would be successful repairing this..
