The test page is not blank, but the colors are fairly light-no brilliant colors at all. And I am printing the test page directly from the prnter, not Windows. And actually, we have never been able to print from this printer accept for test page, We bought this printer last October but have not had the time to use it yet. And we are using Wondows Vista.

    What next? And thank you.

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

Go to start where? On the printer or on the computer we are trying to get to print? Sorry for the dumb question.

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

I understand. Went to the computer and checked out printers, and there is no Microsoft Image Printer. Just Dell Photo P703w, Dell Photoi P703 USB Printer, amd Microsoft XPS Document. Does that help you?

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

No-not connected by a USB cord. This is a wireless printer. We are using a laptop, and we have wireless throughout the house. And our Wi-fi indictaor is on on the printer.

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

Okay. Done. The first printer printed a successful test page-at least not blank-with the little windows logo in the upper left-hand corner--very small. The second printer said-Printer not engaged wjem tryign to print a test page.

    Does that help?

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

I right clicked on that printer, and there is nowhere to "Set as Default". Where do I do this?

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

We may not be able to see it because the checkmark is already there. Should we just try to print a page again now? Maybe we have done something now that will cause something to print? Let me try it now.

Okay. Printed a page, adn it only printed colors-not any black ink. Now what do I do?

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

No blank ink on the original test page from the computer or the page we just printed-only color. Do you think we need to reset the print head? I read that somewhere. Can you help with that? Juts bouthgt both cartridges today. Thanks.

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

It has been at least a year. We bought the printer to basically be a photo printer. Have not had the tie to play with it until now, You think the printer is now defective?

  • jacki880 Sep 14, 2010

Thanks. I was afreaid of that. I will call Dell tomorrow and let you know.

Sure thing, I can definitely help you get this fixed.

1)First off, when you did the test page, is it blank as well?
2)Are you doing the test page from windows or from the printer itself?
3)When was the last time you were able to print successfully?
4)What version of Windows are you running?

Let me know those things and we can definitely get it figured out.

Thanks
Tim

I see, that is very strange, the faint colors is an issue with the printer itself, it could be just old / weak ink cartridges, but lets just get it printing first. Go ahead and click START (or it may just be a round windows icon at the bottom left) then go to Control Panel, then from there go to Printer(s). Please let me know exactly what devices you see in there. It should have something like Microsoft Image Printer, and hopefully at least one other device. Let me know what you see in there and I will let you know what to do from there :).

    Thanks

Oh sorry, on the computer you are trying to print from. Also, this printer is directly connected to the computer, correct? With a USB cord? A cord that looks something like:

    Correct?

    Tim Grayson Sep 14, 2010

yes that helps, and the document printer I am talking about is the XPS document printer.

Ok let's do this, right click on the first Dell printer listed there, go to properties, and left click on it. It will pop up a box, on that first tab that you will be looking at you will see at the bottom a PRINT TEST PAGE button.

Go ahead and left click on that button, does a page come out of the printer? Is it blank? If the answer is NO to the first question (nothing comes out) click OK on the box that probably popped up and then click CANCEL on the printer properties box. Then right click on the 2nd dell printer and do the same thing, properties, then on that first tab, print test page. Do either one print a successful test page?

    Thanks
    Tim

Yes it does, now we need to go back to that first printer, right click again and select SET AS DEFAULT, or something similar to this wording. Once you do that, go back to microsoft word, or any other program and try to print. Make sure when you click print, it should come up with the printer we just set as default, it will say Dell.... something or other.

Try to print and you should be good from here on out.

    Let me know!

Hmm, it's definitely there, it's not under properties, it's right when you right click on the printer...

This is right out of the Windows Vista manual:

Right-click the printer you want to use, and then click Set as Default Printer. A check mark is displayed on the printer icon to mark it as your default printer.

Oh well that is much better than before right? It must have already been default, sorry about that. When you printed the windows test page is there black ink on that page? But not on the page you printed from word or wherever else? And that page definitely has black ink on the screen? It may be that you just need to replace the ink cartridges as they have dried out possibly.

    Thanks
    Tim

Hmm it's unlikely that it needs cleaning unless it has been used quite a bit, but my understanding is that this is basically the first time you are ever printing anything with this printer? There should be no way it is clogged up. You say this printer is over a year old? It sounds like it may have something actually wrong with the print head if no black ink at all is coming out...

Please let me know, how old is this printer again?

    Tim Grayson Sep 14, 2010

I think the printer was defective from the start, if it is brand new, with brand new ink, and it is doing this, there really is no other explanation. Did you purchase it with a major credit card by chance? If so most all credit cards (not debit cards though) will place an automatic warranty on electronics, most of them for 5 years. I have successfully claimed broken electronics through American Express numerous times and have received a full refund each time. Otherwise you can try contacting Dell and explaining the situation, but they may not believe that someone bought a printer and didn't use it for over a year. It happens quite a bit actually, especially with printers, that they have issues right out of the box. Did it sit in the box the whole time? I'm afraid to say it but I think it probably is defective :(

Let me know, hope we can figure something out!

My kodak esp 5210 will not print a test page or a document from my computer.

Hello,
You will only get the calibration page no matter what you try because the printer needs to complete that task before it will let anything else get printed. This cannot be avoided for this model printer! Just follow the instructions as listed on the calibration page (even though you think it may not be needed) and then the printer will act normally!
Good Luck!

Try turning your printer off, then turning it back on. This usually helps, also you could try to make sure that your connection with the your computer is stable.
