Question about Canon GL2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

I just bought a canon Gl2 camera used on Ebay. I did the routine check, and everything seemed cool. I messed around with the zoom, and noticed that when I zoom in, at about 50 percent, it gets really blurry. I thought at first it was because I was too close to the object I was zooming, so I tried all sorts of areas and objects and it's apparent it's a true zooming issue. I typed in Canon Gl2 zoom, and there are already "Canon Gl2 zoom issues" popping up. I found a guy who had a "sticky or non responsive zoom rocker". Mine's not sticky, or non responsive. It just doesn't wanna focus after 50 percent. Is this something I can take apart and fix myself? Is it worth it? or just take it back?

This happens when the internal focus lens is off track, usually caused by impact and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I’m a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I’m semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

If this response has been of any help to you, please be sure and give a positive vote for me on FixYa.com .

Cannon MVX3000i goes into auto zoom

had an issue like that with my GL2 at an older stage. Ended up the dimmers and light combination would emit IR that confussed the camera into thinking I was using the remote control to zoom it... if it has an external (not in the lens) pickup you might try covering the IR reciever on the camera with dark tape (if you use masking tape or electrical tape, take it off after you are done as to not leave goop all over your camera)... a post it might work well. Otherwise look in the setup and turn off the remote if possible.... Just one possibility....

The side grip zoom button does not work.

Camera needs service. There is an assembly that get replaced in the side cabinet, it's a flexible printed circuit or FPC. You can expect to pay ~ $220.00 for this type of repair. Of course, don't overlook having general maintenance performed while it's in the shop... usually it's just a tad more labor, and the cost of parts. www.AVRepair.com is one such place.

No DV output from Canon GL2. Using a firewire cable from DV port on camera to firewire port on Mac Pro tower. Attempting to import the camera live to Final Cut Pro. Previously worked just fine.

Was the tape your trying to import recorded on the camera you are trying to import from? I've noticed that sometimes the tape I recorded on my old Panasonic won't show up on my GL2. It's like it's a blank tape, but I know it's not, as I have it labeled. Stick it back into the panasonic and it plays fine.

Stuck zoom too!

I had the same problem, but it was a case of getting a loose screw tightened up inside the lens.
I took it to an authorised dealer and it cost me the equivalent of about US$25 to get repaired, with the obvious advantage of not messing with the warrenty.
I also hadn't bumped my lens, and I only bought it in July, 2009.. so effectively, new. I did notice the zoom getting looser with time, and would fall out of the chosen zoom length when pointing down (and indeed, up).

Zoom control not working

Sounds like the zoom control needs cleaning I run two of these and they have both gone within a week of each other, it seems to be a common fault. Will need to send them to a repairer as they are fiddly to do.
