I made the mistake of taking my color cartridges on my HP 2605dn to a local ink guy for refill, and the colors didn't print well. OK fine, past that, but now when I install brand new HP color cartridges, the color is still very funky.

Hello, Your problem have only one solution - open laser/scaner Assemblycarefully and clean all mirrors inside whit dry cloth. Dirty mirrors is the most frequently problem for 1600/2600 series If you dont know how to do that just visit HP service Good luck!
This is a common problem with this model of printer. The scanner optic degeneration is due to dust buildup on mirrors and lenses. Since the most vulnerable mirror reflects its laser beam to the magenta and yellow toner cartridges, red tones are the first to show fading. Colors shift: purples turn blue and oranges turn yellow. The printer optics will need to be cleaned by a compliant technician to resolve this issue as it means dismantling your printer and cleaning the mirrors and lenses in the optic section to fix the problem.
Faded prints are possible due to following reasons.
1. Fogged red mirrors inside the Laser box 2. Alignment of the Laser Box 3. Calibration Problem 4. Cleaning Problem
I will guide you with simple steps first, if this dosen't work working with laser box is little tough & time consuming, hence will describe later.
To Calibrate the colors, Press the 'Green Button' in the front panel, use the arrow keys to navigate through menu.
Select 'System Setting' by pressing the green button again, navigate using the arrow keys and select the 'Calibrate Color', select green button to select and confirm to 'Calibrate Now'. This will take few minutes.
In addition to that, to clean the paper path, select the green button and use the arrow keys and navigate thru' menu and select 'Service'. select using the green button and navigate through menu and select cleaning option. This will take few minutes.
Try printing some documents and check whether you have fixed. If you have not got the original print quality, Let know to guide you more technically.
Check to see if you might have purchased Photo Magenta or other color by mistake. I had my daughter get me some ink and the clerk said that it would work fine so she purchased two replacement cartridges of Photo ink. Resulting in very light print color. This might be your problem. Worth checking. Hope this is of some help. Bud
Have you thought about having your printer cartridges refilled? There are huge savings to be made in doing so and the quality can be just as good as the original cartridges (depending upon the refiller). Another option would be for you to purchase an older color laser printer such as the HP Color Laserjet 4500 or 4550. I use one myself and couldnt be happier with it. And as its an older printer, you can get the cartridges relatively cheap.
Dear Black Rose
It is strongly recommended to change your colour cartridge.
Or it can be possible that you did not use your colour cartridge for a long time.
The nozzle of colour cartridge are blocked, if you did not use your colour cartridge for a long time.
Purchase a new cartridge if you can or go for a local refiller to refill (if possible) your colour cartridge.
