Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

9/13/10- Our air conditioner makes a loud noise every time it goes on-enough to keep us awake at night. We have had your representatives in to look at it as well as the people who installed the system in 2006. There seems to be a conflict of opinions. One says I need a compressor, the other says I don't. They also suggested that I wait until the compressor dies to do something. In the meantime, no one has done anything or offered a solution for months now. If they keep me waiting long enough, my warranty will lapse something I'm sure they would be very pleased to have happen.I can't get a straight answer from these "experts"- perhaps you can help?

Humming noise in house

Might be a noisy draft inducer motor. Try backing out the bolts and repositioning it is what I would try. Or pay a dude $400 for a new one.

My new Goodman central A/C unit makes a loud swishing noise in the attic( like a gust of wind). It this normal can anything be done to quiten it, and is this normal? It keeps us awake at night.

You can pick up some soundproofing material from Home Depot et al that will quiet it down a little bit, or you might be able to turn down the fan speed using your thermostat (if your t-stat supports this), but it is most likely a side-effect of your unit kicking on. You might have too big of a unit for your house, or too big of a blower. A service tech would be able to tell you if this was the case, but obviously that's going to cost a bit for them to come out and look at it.

Are you hearing the whooshing noise through your vents in your floor/wall/ceiling, or is it coming straight out of the attic? Depending on your air handler/thermostat, you might be able to set your fan to slowly spin up, rather than going to top speed right away. This would probably make it a little quieter for you. I wouldn't suggest trying to do it on your own however, because (again, depending on your unit) there could be some reason why it does it like this, and/or could be some settings that would be devastating if they were messed with. I would suggest you call in a service tech, unfortunately.

Unit constantly makes a clicking noise.

Electronic filters use static dicharges to filter the air. Unfortunately the make that clicking noise when they discharge. LG calls it a plasma filter. Clean both the regular and the plasma filter to see if that helps.

Random "Cracking" Noise

Its refrigerant gas has leaked out so ice is forming on the evaporator which breaks and causes this cracking sound. The same is resulting in less cooling as well. Get the refrigerant gas pressure checked and fixed.
