Question about Magellan RoadMate 360 GPS Receiver

5 Answers

Map updates I have found some websites where I can download RoadMate manager, but it doesn't say whether it is Vista compatible. Also, I am a little afraid that I will mess things up since other folks have had so many problems. If I download it will it really update my maps? Is there anything I should be concerned about?

Well, I just started to download from a free website, but it requires that I join an "adult" website to get the free software. Do you have any suggestions? Do you know of a reputable site where I can find the Roadmate Manager?

    Thanks!

Here's where I found the free download, but it requires you to join adult websites!?!? Not sure I want to do that.

Anybody have experience with this download site?

But none of these are for Roadmate 360?

  • thtgrl_38 May 19, 2008

What the ?!?!? I use your link and get to the download, and it says I have to pay, so I pay. Then I log in and i can't get back to the link. Everytime I go to the link it makes me re-login and takes me to another page. Then when I search "roadmate" it doesn't find anything! HELP!!!

  • thtgrl_38 May 19, 2008

It's just a vicious circle. After I login, I click the link and it tells me I have to be a member to download, so I login, and get the same thing over and over. I did send a ticket to their customer service, so hopefully they will help. Thanks for your help!

    Dilipbagdi,

The software on the page you have listed does not show that it is for the Roadmate 360. IT is all for newer models.

Yes, it should run on Vista. If it doesn't, there is a document from Magellan.com that shows you how to run the software in compatibility mode:

Q: Is My MapSend® Program Compatible with Windows
Vista?
A: Like many programs written prior for Windows® XP they may or may not run correctly on Windows Vista™. Our MapSend products from 2003 and later were developed and tested on XP; however
Vista was not available when MapSend was developed. Therefore Magellan Navigation recommends that consumers use the “Program compatibility wizard” provided by Microsoft®.

Below is a brief explanation of this Tool:

How to run the program Compatibility Wizard:

1. Click on the START button then select CONTROL PANEL . Under control panel you then click onto PROGRAMS under Programs you will see this screen below you then select “Use an older program with this version of Windows”.

2. You will then see this screen below. Click Next.

3. Select “I want to use the program in the CD-ROM drive/I want to locate the program manually” and click Next.

4. As a result of selecting to run the program from the CD-ROM drive/location you will see a message at which point you will have the option to choose your operating system. Select the “Microsoft Windows XP” option and click Next.

5. You then will be prompted to select a display setting. Select “256 colors” and click Next.

6. On the next screen, click Next unless your PC is controlled by an administrator. I.E. Your company owns the PC you are using. In which case you will need to consult with the company administrator.

7. Select “Allow” and the program will begin to install.

HERE is a nother useful manual on using this software.

Hope that helps!

Where can i download up to date maps for free for my magellan roadmate 800

You have to first go online and search Magellan Contact Manager to download that software to manage your device. Once that is done, you connect your device and register it. Then on the menu choose Help and "check for updates". There will be a scan and the available updates for software, maps etc will show, as will their cost if any.

Magellan Roademate 5045 frozen on map screen. Is there any way of restarting it? There is no small hole for a reset button and I tried holding the power slider for ten seconds. No luck

I had exact same 'Magellan 5045 frozen' problem. Here is how I fixed it. Go to www.magellangps.com/contentmanager. Download and install Magellan Content Manager. Plug in your GPS. If content manager does not activate automatically, start it manually, like any other windows program or by right clicking on its icon. You will be asked to register your device and its serial number, etc.
After registering, if Content Manager fails to take you directly to the download location for your device, along the top of the Magellan web pages you will see a set of tabs, one of those is 'Support'. This is a pull-down menu. Select Manuals and Software update. This then takes you to their 'Support' web page. On the support web page, click on the 'Manuals and Software Downloads' button. This will take you to a page where you will be asked to select from four Download Categories. For the roadmate 5045 and similar gps intended to be used in an auto, select 'Magellan Vehicle Navigation'. This will take you to another page where you will have to select from three product series. For the 5045 series, select 'Roadmate Series'. This is another pulldown where you will have to select your product number, e.g., Roadmate 5045. This will finally take you to a page where you can select software and map updates. You will have to connect your Roadmate gps to your computer via USB and you will have to register. It is confusing because you will get incorrect and irrelevant statements like your device failed to register. It is somewhat quirky but if you follow the instructions and you have a wideband cable or FIOS internet connection, the upgrade to the software and the maps takes about 30 minutes. Do unplug your RoadMate from the USB unless asked to do so by the Content Manager program. After the software and maps update, the Roadmate 5045 worked like better than new for me.

HOW DO I UPDATE THE 1412

To update your magellan roadmate is very simple. But take note, there are two (2) types of updates:
  1. Software update, which are free.
  2. Maps update, but you have to purchase them.
Either ways you will get both updates from the support link from th magellan website. For software update:
  1. first go to the website, www.magellangps.com,
  2. Place the cursor on the support link and a list will pop out,
  3. From the list select manuals and softwares,
  4. Select the manuals and software link that is on the page,
  5. You select the vehicle navigation form the list,
  6. Once you select the type some other pages come up then you select the road mate,
  7. Once you select the road mate, a list comes up, then you select the road mate 1412,
  8. Then the download link will pop up, then you click on the link to download it.
  9. Once you download it, connect your gps to the computer, then you update it from there.
Sometimes, the moment you have the magellan roadmate software on your computer, as soon as there is a latest update, it will notify you to download it for your gps update.
To update a map,
  1. You purchase the maps once they are available from magellan website,
  2. go to the website as stated above,
  3. place the cursor on the maps ans a list will come out,
  4. Select either vehicle navigation maps or outdoor maps depending on what you want to update,
  5. Then you select the product type and the product model
  6. A page will pop up with the latest map for you to download.
  7. Then you add to cart.
That way your maps will be updated.
I hope this information helped.

I'm trying to install Magellan Roadmate 1470 on Windows Vista, and am totally lost! Any suggestions?

Hi there really isn't anything to install, register your GPS download the updated software I believe its version 2.2 for your model and CALL them within 30 days of purchase to see fi a map update is available.

  • If you wait till after the first 30 days you must buy any map updates.

When you connect the unit to your computer you can access the drive on it but its not like the TOMTOM's where it loads their software onto your computer.

Can i upgrade my roadmate 1200 to include Portugal?

I also have a RoadMate 1200 and I wanted to update my map as well.

After extensive research (and periodically checking up on this every couple of months), I have found that the RoadMate series devices do not allow for any official map upgrades.

There have been reports of successful third party software installations on the RoadMate. Installing a third party software program (or "firmware") would completely change the menu on your GPS. It would be like installing Windows Vista on an iMAC. If it is possible to run an alternative firmware on the RoadMate, then it would be quite possible to download a usable map of Portugal. I have not seen any evidence of this yet. When I do I will let you know! :)

Also, an alternative firmware installation should only be done by an expert computer user. And an expert user knows that alternative firmware will void the warranty and that alternative firmware is VERY risky.

Sorry,
Steve
