The piston rings seem to be wearing out. Check if the oil level is receding. The blue smoke is an indicator of excess oil being burnt. When the mower deck is disengaged there is less load on the engine and hence less or no smoke. You need to get the rings changed at the least.

mine recommends using only detergent oil rated API service classification SG-SL. Sounds like an older model and the synthetic may be to thin. Try changing the oil to a SAE 30 to see.

15hp Briggs Vanguard 1cylinder runs like it's on choke emitting black smoke. What can be wrong ?

The "black" smoke has me wondering... I would suspect that you may have a broken ring on the piston, or even ha hole in the piston.

Several weeks ago I found two of my neighbors mowing lawn and pumping out heavy clouds of smoke. I went to each of them and they told me they just filled the oil. They filled it up until it came out of the dipstick hole. This results in too much oil in the crank case and not enough air, so the engine forces the oil past the rings and then you are burning oil with the gas producing a large amount of smoke. I took my turkey baster and a can to each and removed the oil until it was at the proper level. Then I showed them the dip stick and explained that the oil level must be between the two marks on the dip stick. This situation of too much oil produced a huge amount of smoke, but the smoke was more white than black.

gas oil and filters ...remove gas replace w fresh regular 87 octane then change spark plug simply walking in any auto store with plug in hend will be best if you dont know which to buy then check oil make sure to wipe dip stick and check oil after that finnaly replace the air filter your not far from burnning you engine you are most likely to be out of oil the fresh gas and oil are the most important but filter and plug will help things run smother check your oil and filters regularly if you use every day once a week oil check once a week or bi-weekly once a month and befor use after storage

Occasional heavy smoke on tickover, but not using oil and oil clean.

HI do you now the color of the smoke
if engine emits white smoke its not burning the fuel
it could be water mixing with fuel = head gasket even tho you
dot have water in the oil
if engine emits black smoke - that's excessive fuel to air ration
check air filter & air inlet to see if clogged

if engine emits blue smoke - excessive oil consumption
cloud be valve seals

Mowing keeps stalling and emitting clouds of white smoke

You probably either have too much oil in the engine or there is water in the fuel system.

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Smoke from engine of lawnmower

usually large clouds of smoke are from having too much oil in the crankcase, or tipping the mower so that oil runs into the cylinder. Check the level of oil, and make sure it's not overfilled.
