Question about Porter Cable 4 5 Gallons 150PSI Job Boss Oil Lube Mobile Air Compressor ? C3551

1 Answer

I cannot turn the drain plug valve to shut it off so air pressure will build up in the tank. I can remove the whole plug but not the inner valve. What direction is it threaded?

Drain plugs are standard npt thread and are removed by turning counter clockwise. New drain plugs are available at lowes for under $4. Good luck.

FYI - I followed the recommended 15 min continuous motor break in period leaving the valve open. After this period the valve wouldn't close. I'm wondering if it got too hot. Maybe a better way would have been to remove the drain completely.
Thanks for your speedy replay and the Lowe's tip.
    Very much appreciated.

Engine won't shut off

Check the safety pop off valve. You may need to drain the water that accumulates in the tank when air is compressed. There's a plug on the bottom of the tank.

I have a porter cable compressor, but the pump won't shut off, and the pressure won't build it

Hi

Here are a few things to check, you may have already checked some of these.

*Electricity...Compressors will run best with full 115Vot 15AMP/Or 220V electrical supply from a circuit, over the shortest electrical cord as possible.

*Air Leaks..Place your ear close to the compressor and listen for air leaking, if you hear air that is not normal and means you have to locate and repair whatever it is that is leaking.
*Check the air unloader valve... The air unloader valve will blown out air when you turned off the compressor, that is normal.
But it should not have air leaking out of it all of the time. If so then it is faulty and in need of repair/replacement.
*Valves...If either the intake or exaust valves fail, breaks, or fails to seat, then your compressor will run 24 hours a day and never build up to the correct pressure for shut-off.
*Gaskets...Check to see if your gaskets have failed.
You could have a gasket failure between the pistons and you will never know it because it shows no external air leak.
If this situation happens then the air will only cycle between cylinders and never build up the correct air pressure.
One way to check the gasket is remove the air filter, then put your hand over the intake.
If correct then it will **** you hand against the intake.
If the valve or valves have failed then you will feel the air sucking in and blowing out.
*Piston Rings and Cylinder...The piston rings could be stuck, broken, or worn and not allowing the correct pressure to build up in your tank.
A worn cylinder will also contribute to the problem of pressure build-up.
*Pressure Switch...Check for air leaks at the pressure switch, it has a rubber diaphram that can fail and leak air out of the system.
Please take time to rate me

My compressor runs and builds pressure but, with nothing touched all of a sudden does not produce the same amount of pressure as before, it will not run my printing machine. What should I check?

Does the compressor have enough CFM to run the printing machine. Will the compressor build up pressure and shut off if you close the discharge valve at the tank. Your printing machine may simply be using to much air. If the above items are not the case you may have a faulty check valve in the receiver tank or valves going bad in the LP or HP heads. The valves may also simply have carbon build up or dirt of some type not allowing the valves to seat properly. I would start at the check valve. One way to check the check valve is to see if you have air blowing from the bleed off line at the pressure switch all the time. Another way to check is loosen the fitting at the High Pressure head an see if you have air blowing continously. Caution do not remove the fitting at the head completely. If the check valve is bad you will have high pressure air blowing until the receiver tank is drained.

Compressor runs to 175psi but trips pressure relief when pressure drops tries to restart motor but motor wont turn blows breaker. changed whole pressure switch have same problem.

The problem is lilkely the check valve between the compressor and the tank -- it is alowing pressure to build from tank to compressor preventing the compressor from turning over. Clean, maybe replace, check valve...

I have a porter cale C5101 compressor. It hesitate to auto start when the pressure is low, always trip my circuit breaker.

What amp breaker do you have this hooked to. I would use no less than 15 amp ,preferrably a 20 amp. Next do you drain tank after use on a regular basis. If you don't moisture can build up inside tank and cause hard starting on automatic. If you need to drain tank there should be a drain valve on bottom of tank. try turning it counterclocwise with compressor off. If it dosen't turn that way try clockwise, air and moisture should drain. If you have alot of water in tank then shut valve and turn compressor on and bring to full pressure, then repeat draining procedure until no more water comes out. Hope this helps. Thank you

There is only one relief valve and it is on the outside. The valve is set to open if pressure builds past 160psi. You may be having trouble with the pressure regulator (large knob with high/low arrow). This regulator will leak at times. You can determing if it is leaking by unplugging /shutting off the compressor when you hear the leak. If the leak stops as you shut it off then most likely due to discharge tube seal at the head of the pump. If you continue to hear leak after shut off turn pressure knob counter clockwise all the way out. If you hear a change in the amount of leak or stops then pressure valve is problem. I have an upright craftsman compressor which is VERY slow at building pressure. The shut off is 150psi. When I use the unit, and it turns on, it runs forever to build back up, even when im not using it....

Your unit should fill within 5 min. Compressor may have worn cylinder (assuming oil-less) , worn valves or just leaking. Easy test. Spray soapy water on all connections/fittings including drain valve and regulator while compressor is running. Repair as needed. If no leaks, remove plug from outlet, remove cover and examine cylinder. Turn crank by hand till piston is all the way up into cylinder. Examine carefully the condition of the cylinder close to top. If the cylinder is scratched or worn then pressure is leaking between piston/cylinder and will not fill tank properly. Replacement cylinder kit available at Sears, cost under $50. If no leaks and the cylinder looks good, then valve plate may have broken gasket or reed valves. Replace as needed. Good luck with your project.

The problem that you describe is most likely the in-tank check valve (brass or chrome valve where air enters tank ). Easy to check. Run compressor till you have about 60-80 lbs in tank then shut-off / unplug for safety. Remove the small hose (1/4) at the check valve and verify that air is leaking from valve. If leaking remove cap from checkvalve and look at inner plastic valve for cracks. Replace as needed then re-test for leaks. You can be creative in making the inner plastic valve (teflon or nylon ball 1/2 - 5/8 ) or replace the whole valve. (inner part not sold separately) Good luck with your repair and post again if you have a question.

SOUNDS LIKE THERE COULD BE DIRT OR RUST IN THE RELIEF VALVE REMOVE AND CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIONS RELIEVE ALL PRESSURE BEFORE DOING THIS. SHOULD BE A DRAIN **** ON THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE TANK
