The small black wire running to the coil (ignition module) is the kill wire. Any of the safety switches on the mower or the key switch can send ground to this switch and turn off the engine. Most commonly the cause is one of the safety switches. A repair shop usually charges 1 to 2 hours of diagnostic time to find the problem. It is actually less expensive to just replace all of the safety switches and the ignition switch than it is to figure out which one is failed. There will be a switch under the seat, one on the transmission for neutral, one on the PTO or deck engagement lever, and one on the brake/clutch. On most modern riding mowers, these switches are run in parellel with each other and only connect ground. Some will connect positive current also to the key switch.
Good luck!

I have a craftsman riding mower model 247.288810. While cutting my lawn the engine all stalled and would not start anymore. I changed the spark plug and the battery is new, what could it be?

there are 3 safety switches, clutch, deck and seat, Craftsman 247288810 Lawn Tractor Parts
take the cover off so u can access the coil, unhook the black wire from the coil, not spark plug cable, try to start it,if it starts then a safety switch is bad,if it doesnt, then jump the solenoid,if it starts then it is the seat or clutch switch,if you want to bypass safety switches, connect a switch to the ground and coil

Craftsman riding mower with B&S 24 HP v twin series 440000. Will not start. Engine turns with plugs out. Valves adjusted. Fresh fuel, fuel pump & filter, plugs, oil & filter. Any suggestions?

there are 3 safety switches to check, the seat switch,brake/clutch and deck,if any one of those is bad or misadjusted it wont start,1 simple way to check is to,take the cover off the flywheel, locate the small black wire that goes to the coil and remove it,now jump the two big bolts on the solenoid together with the key one, then try to use the key to start instead of jumpinf solenoid,if that works then the switches are bad,if the key doesnt work then its the solenoid

I need a wiring diagram, mainly from ignition switch to coil/stator.

pull the black ground wire off from the coil, try to start the motor,if it starts, put the wire back to shut it off,,,one or all of your safety switches is bad,you can bypass all the safety switches(as long as you dont care),by putting a switch connected to the coil and the other side,a ground,if you want safety switches then you have 3 to choose from to replace,2 stop the mower from starting and the 3rd stops it from running if it did start, here is a 42 inch, pretty much the same, you didnt tell me what model or make,

Hi guys i have a craftsman ride on lawn mower and i changed new coil and new plug but is still not getting spark any ideas wud be great

sounds like you have a short on your ground wire...if you disconnect the black lead off your coil and then check for spark you may find you have one now. if so trace that black wire back looking for a bare spot where its rubbing metal. or it could be a safety switch gone bad. but pull wire to see if spark returns.

Old craftsman snowblower, 3.5 horse, no on/off switch wire, where does it run to from the switch?

should be a black wire from your coil by the flywheel if its like a riding mower just take the cover off and you should see it just follow that and see where it goes that is what stalls your engin

Engine wont fire....

There should be 1 black wire that grounds the coil(s) for kill. Be sure this black wire is not grounded when switch is in on or start position. It will be connected to the coil(s) at the flywheel.

I have a craftsman 25.hp model 917.251572, unable

You can check the coil and kill switch out by removing the metal cover on the engine and removing the coil shorting wire. Crank it again and see if you have spark. Yes? You have a bad switch somewhere. It could be the ignition switch itself or perhaps a safety switch? There is a safety switch under the seat of most modern riding mowers.

If you still dont have spark your coil is most likely to blame. You can purchase a new coil online for a fairly good price and replace it. You only need a thin business card to use as a gapper when putting the coil back on to set the gap to the flywheel.

Oh...and one more thing. You might find a critters nest under your engines cover. That is usually how perfectly good coils get heat damaged. So be ready for a surprise when you take the cover off!

Good luck and be careful!

Engine on 17.5 hp craftsman mower starts but stalls when clutch is let out !

Check all 3 of your safety switches mounted on the mower. Take a wire or connector and connect the WHITE wires together on each switch together one at a time to see which one has gone bad. Once you find out which one is bad, take the 2 white wires and connect them together where they're always connected or replace the switch.

Craftsman lawn tractor briggs 19hp engine, no fire to the plugs, has new coil, new plugs, seat switch, could it possibly be in the stator?

try disconnecting the black ground wire from the coil,if it starts or fires then it is a saftey switch, then it is a process of eliminating the bad switch.
