Take the pull cord off of the spool, then wind the spring CCW until it seems strong enough to return the cord when it is pulled out. Wedge the spool so that it doesn't unwind the spring, and work the cord into the spool. If you have to form any knots, be sure to melt the cord end so that it prevents the knot from slipping off. Hope this helps!

Can i take the pull starter off my briggs and stratton mower in one unit

Yes you can... if you are removing the center screw and wanna take the whole rope pulley off, do it slow... if when you start pulling off the pulley and you feel like the recoil is coming up with it, immediately put it back down or the recoil spring will unravel fast... it's not impossible to ravel the spring back up, just a pain if you have never done it before. If you are trying to install new rope, you can do so without removing the pulley at all.

Go to you tube and you will find multiple videos on how to replace rope on lawnmower recoil assy
Tons of videos. You can do this!! Good luck

Mantis tiller qiuts after a short running time ,then cant pull the recoil rope

Anon, it sounds like you need to get your Mantis serviced. If you cant pull the recoil rope it sounds like the coil is overheating and obstructing the fly wheel.

Pull rope will not pull

Remove recoil rope assembly. Ensure rope is properly wrapped around. While recoil assembly is removed use ratchet and socket to rotate fly wheel, remove spark plug first, observe compression and exhaust at spark plug whole during rotation of fly wheel. Clean or replace spark plug. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Set spark plug gap. Always use Stabile in gas. Replace coil rope is required. Purchased by the foot at any mower repair store.

Lawn mover starter rope replacement

most starters can be taken off the engine and replace the rope without completely tearing the whole unit apart. by that I mean you should not have to mess with the recoil spring unless it is broken. remove old rope from pulley, wind up the pulley and hold it so it wont unwind, replace new rope onto pulley and tie a good knot and melt the ends of the rope so it wont unravel, then slowly let the pulley retract the correct amount of rope. if the recoil spring has unsprung on you, it will take a little time and probably several tries to wind it back up and position it back in the starter. they like to unspring while doing this so take some time and an extra person to hold and assist might go a long ways. good luck. How do I install a recoil spring ?

Sometimes the hook at the end of the starter spring has broken off from rust or has straightened itself out. What I do if I don't have time to get a new spring is make myself a hook and attach it to the notch. Then you have to manually wind the spring in the right direction and hope that the spring doesn't unravel on you. Wear safety goggles for that!
If I need to get it started without the recoil spring, I just wrap the starting rope around the engine and start it that way until I have time to get a new part.
