Question about Apple iMac G4 Desktop

1 Answer

I have a Mac G4 desktop. It froze up so I restarted using the power button and when it came up it had a blinking question mark inside a folder. It will not do anything even after restarting several times. What do I do?

This means the mac can not find the system to start up, you can try holding down the alt key as you start the mac, this may bring up a choice of systems to boot from if not then try holding down the shift key at startup, as this will boot without extensions loading. If none of this works then you need the startup dvd that came with the mac, if you dont have it the you need a retail copy of the mac os that will boot your mac , if its g4 then osx 10.3 or 10 .4 will work.

My Mac desktop, justa couple years old when i turn it on, the white screen comes up and after a few shows folder, with a question mark. The icon blinks, but nothing happens, mouse doesn't work either

Mac can't find the system to start up as usual, if you have the dvd that came with it (or any retail mac os dvd) start up from that and run the disc utility which will hopefully repair your disc.
If you have not the dvd , then do this start up the mac holding down apple and s keys , you will get a black screen and white text. You are now in the system firmware and you have to careful here!
wait a mo press return once, then type
fsck -f
press return once, this will force the firmware to check the disc.

if this goes ok then try restarting normally.

hope you helps
thanks for using FixYa

  • Click the iTunes eject button (see Figure 1).
  • Hold down the mouse button when you hear the startup sound as the computer restarts.
  • Start up from Mac OS X and customize the toolbar with an eject button.
Mac OS X
  • In the Finder, Choose View > Customize Toolbar. In the window that appears, drag the Eject button to the toolbar, then click Done. Select the disc you want to eject in the Finder window, then click the Eject button in the toolbar.
  • Press the Eject key on the Apple Pro Keyboard.
  • To open the second optical drive on a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) computer, press Option-Eject on the Apple Pro Keyboard.
  • If you have a keyboard without an eject key, press F12 (under Mac OS X 10.1 and later). Note: You must press the F12 key longer to prevent the tray from accidentally opening.

It can not find the hard drive or the startup folder on the hard drive. Try and fix that by putting in the original boot cd/dvd and repair and choose your hard drive start up folde as boot device. If you can not your hard drive may have died.

Your Mac is saying it cannot find the operating system. Usually due to corrupt startup files or hard drive death.

My screen is on but just have a small camera in the middle of the screen blinking.. G4 power book can you help?

I seen a blinking folder with a question mark in the middle in folder, in the middle of a display screen, but not a camera.

Either way, you are not able to access your main desktop so that is where I want to help.

A blinking folder with a ? in middle, is an indication that your bootable Mac OS X volume cannot be found.

If you do, I would first recommend you try this procedure first:
(PRAM Reset)
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} • First, hold in your power button for approximately 10 seconds to do a hard shutdown, if you have not already turned your Mac off.

• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the start up sound for the third time.
• Release the keys and allow the Powerbook G4 to start up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this still returns you to a blinking ? folder, try this process:
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} DISK UTILITYYou can use your Mac OS X install disc to repair your hard drive and Mac OS X volume using Disk Utility. Click the link below to try this procedure.
* Apple Support Link:
Use Disk Utility to Repair Disk

Should neither of these processes work and you still boot up to a flashing ? folder, then your only recourse is to use your Mac OS X installation disc and perform an Archive and Install procedure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} This procedure also allows you to save your applications, files and folders without the old directory interferring with you then accessing those files and creating a new Mac OS X Directory.

Here is the Apple Support Link for that procedure:
Archive and Install

This should get your Powerbook G4 back to normally functionality without any serious data loss.

My Power mac G4 Quicksilver has problems. When i boot it up the chime comes on, and i see the boot up screen. Although in the middle of the screen there is a folder that is blinking a ? mark sign. I tried...

The folder with the blinking question mark means that your Mac cannot find a bootable system on the internal drive. This usually means either that the drive has been corrupted or is not accessible. The proper repair procedure is to boot from the system installation CD and use the Utility menu to run Disk Utility / Repair Disk on the internal drive. But at this point, I'd have to ask you to elaborate on your claim that you "messed up your Super Drive" before I can figure out how to proceed from where you are.

G4: I keep getting a blinking folder

To things can be wrong

1 the system folder is corrupt
2 The hard drive is bad

Too find out which one it is get the boot disk that came with it and restart holding the C key. If it boots and there is no hard drive image on the desktop it is bad if there is one then reinstall the system and you should be good.

My Mac wont work. blinking Folder with "?"

When the "?" mark comes up, it means it's looking for the operating system to boot to. It can be fixed by opening system preferences and in the startup settings, select your operating system as the tarted startup. It should speed up boot up time.
