Do I need a new hard drive for my acer d260?

It sounds more like you haven't installed ubuntu correctly. Why do you think the drive is faulty, was it giving drive errors before you loaded ubuntu? Does the bios have s.m.a.r.t. disk checking enabled?

If you can get back into ubuntu perhaps by booting off an ubuntu disk you can check the disk - here's how How to run checkdisk
If not take the drive out get a sata to usb converter and run a disk checking utility on a friends machine
for example chkdsk space diskletter colon space / f
chkdsk e: /f

Wont read anymore or do anything!

large hard drives dont like being swapped around to different computers and there operating systems they are not good swingers

try connecting the drive directly to a port on the computer.

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb but its not working

ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

Also check if it's detected in "Disk Management".

Here you can verify if the partition and format are correct for the Operating System.

Check the Drive's status in Device manager.

This will verify if the external drive has a drive letter designation.

Check Partition and Format.

Log in as Administrator account in windows or any other account with administrative privileges

Insert your removable disk into the USB port.

Click Start, right click on computer and select manage.

Now, click Disk Management.

Check whether drive letter for the device is present.

Check the lower window to find whether the device is detected (such as Disk 1, Disk 2, etc).

If the device is detected with a drive letter, verify that no other device is using that drive letter.

If it is, change it to unused drive letter.

hope this helps

My seagate hard drive cannot be detected on the desktop anymore. Any ideas what to do? I have a Mac Powerbook G4

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link.

Installing ubuntu on Raid 0

Ok I have Duo booted ubuntu a couple of times now. When you were partitioning did you use the automatic or he manual? Since you have two hard disks, I will assume you use a desktop and you know how to take it apart. So, if you did automatics the bestt I can tell you is to swith your hard drives around physically and if that fails try switching g the boot menu order. If you used manual partitioning then when you were creating the ext3 partition you did not type / in the text box labeled Moint Point (that's the best I can help you) I hope this has fixed your problem. Disk drive wont read Ubuntu disk

Make sure you are booting from CD-ROM and not the hard drive, If that doesn't help get out your windows CD...run it until right after it formats your hard drive then stop your computer and boot with the Ubuntu disc...
You will love Ubuntu...it clean not bloated, straight forward, plenty of free help and software, everything you want is available -free and works better.
...good luck (there is a learning curve, but not bad) please leave rating

Hard disk Error, Please help!

If the BIOS cannot detect the hard disk then you most likely have a faulty hard disk.
You need to purchase a new one.

seems your MBR is damage. but you can repair it if only you can boot in windows cd and entering in the recovery console.

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1.    Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.    When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.    If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4.    When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.    At the command prompt, type this commands one at a time.

FIXMBR  C:
FIXBOOT  C:
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTLDR  C:\
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTDETECT.COM  C:\
BOOTCFG  /rebuild

6.    To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

no warranty...you use on your own risk :)
