This is a hard drive failure problem - unmountable boot volume - failed short self test (at least on HPs after running the HP diagnostics). Find a CD with the OS (Windows) of the version installed on your computer (including the service packs). Boot from the CD, and press R. This starts the Recovery Console. At the prompt, type "chkdsk /p /r" (without the quotes and followed by enter). This sometimes will recover and move the critical records away from the bad sector.

Sometimes, you can take the drive out of the computer, wrap it well to prevent moisture condensing in the unit, and put it in the freezer for a while. This will get the drive to function for a short while - long enough to transfer critical files off.

You will need to plan on replacing the hard drive. If it is under warranty, contact the manufacturer.

If your computer didn't come with the OS on a CD, find someone who has them. Windows User's Group members are likely to have multiple copies and may be willing to lend one out.

I hope this helps.

(the freezer route needs to be several days - there is a lot of mass in the platters)

Often times that error means theirs a problem with the hard drive itself. You may want to try (if you're comfortable with the hardware) to make sure that the Hard Drive's physical connections are still intact.

Why doesmy Inspiron One 2330 make beeping sounds?

When the main board, during POST, discovered an error it will try to tel the user. Because some errors block the complete start form the computer, so it can't display the error on the screen. It will tell what is wrong by beeping. Count the beeps and check in the manual, what is wrong. Perhaps you can solve the problem yourself when you know what is wrong.

Cant get the computer to work. a1540n, When I start it up the screen says no signal.

try to know most answers will be wrong, due to
  • dont know what is in your system.(inside)
  • nor its history or abuse or wrong parts inside.
  • Nor if the hdd is original or replaced. (hp recover missing)
  • nor what recover media you have. HP is correct answer here.
  • nor of PC is sick, fails to run KNOPPIX 7 live tests. ask.
a very old PC obsolete and an unstated monitor,

NO SIGNAL means the PC is turned off. (it tells truth)or no sync.
ill discount the no SIG. if the PC is not booted NOSIG is 100% normal, after all the PC is turned off.

That screen you saw is the old relic REcovery.
why run XP and not upgrade this virus magnet. its bad bad bad.
That screen. Recovery
the old PCs you then insert the HP media kit CDs. and install it.
on newer PC' HP moved the CDs to the HDD partitions called RECOVERY. (useless if HDD is bad)

all PCs worked before , all did.
what matters only is now and tomorrow.

what good tech does is this.
1: scrap the PC (upgrade) or upgrade to w7(up) as 99% have done in USA< (hard proof i have)
2: if loving XP is your futures, (why get a virus) then you need HP recovery media. but first power up and hit f11 (or F10) and see if the
on HDD recovery is working if not, only install media works.
then that brings up where do i get this media.
answer not from HP they ended support now
MS ended in 3 years ago.

leaving what? buying used disks or from hacker sites full of virus.

what I do , in this case is go to Goodwill
walk in tip cases, see that Windows 7 coa, sticker
i buy that for like $20 and start there.
buy a newer box. that is SUPPORTED.
a win win deal, in all cased.

using old PC , invites VIRUS
make repairs 10x more costly (no parts, etc)
or shops refuse to touch it for all the above.

MS does no see XP now. so.>>>
The Disks from HP are OEM disks, and only work with your COA sticker number, using other disks will fail to activate
at MS Dot com.
the only correct disks are HP disks, unless playing for retail license is ok. with you from some on line pirate.

My accer 5740 comes up with status error oxc00000e9 what does this mean

Researching microsoft resources, this looks like it is either a registry error or possibly a system BIOS error.

Please tell me what happened just prior to you receiving this error? How old is the laptop? Have you made any changes to the laptop recently, either software or hardware?

If you have a recovery partition, you can do a non-desctructive recovery to see if you can restore your windows installation to a normal state. If you have a restore disk, you can do the same thing, you will restore the computer to factory settings. However, you may loose your documents and files if you are not careful.

You can also try to start the computer and hit the F8 key, which should bring you a menu. See if you can start in safe mode. If so, try and use system restore and find a restore point on a date before you started having this problem.

You can also look for the correct key to go into the setup before the computer tries to start windows. The key is often the F2 key or the delete key. Your screen may tell you after you see the acer splash screen. If you get into the BIOS setup, you can look for the key or selection to reset your BIOS.

I have included a link to the ACER support page for your laptop. The tab you will come up on is a bios download. But there are driver downloads, applications downloads, patch downloads and user manuals.

Please respond after you have tried my suggestions.

When attempting to start my desktop computer (sony vaio pcv-rx540), I got the 'we apoligize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully...' error message. From doing a little research I'm...

try starting it in safe mode(f8 while starting up and restore from there), if not you might have to boot from the recovery cd, and last but not least reinstall windows

I have a a45-s130 toshiba laptop computer....My system recovery rom won't work...I know that the rom is the correct one because it was sent by toshiba...Everytime I start the computer with it in the rom...

This happens quite a bit. The recovery CD is looking for a machine ID from your laptop and didn't find the correct one. You need to download Toshiba's DMI utility (put it on a CD and make it bootable), boot from it, then run DMI Utility and tell your machine it is an A45 series. That'll do it.

Recovery and Applications Issue (PLease help)

Restart your computer normally without the disk in. I beleive there's a message that pops up on the screen, something like F2 for recovery ( not sure of exact key). Press the key it tells you to and try starting the process over. Let me know what happens. If this solves your problem rate this as fixed. If not, DON'T rate it yet add a comment letting me know what happened and I'll be glad to assist you further. MAKE SURE YOUR ADAPTOR IS PLUGGED IN! Thanks.

Computer will not start

do you have a recovery cd? that came with your system, id boot from it and run a recovery. Otherwise if you have windows xp installation cd, do what is called a "repair install". Follow the instructions on this link below:

read the WHOLE page and follow the instructions carefully if you don't want to lose data, a mistake can be costly.

Good luck!
