Take it in for service, probably has stretched cables and need to readjusted. It will be worth it to get a tuneup because Giant is a bike shop quality bike, not a discount house special. Treat it right and it will last you a long time.

I have an old 12 speed racing bike with the shifters on the frame.i wish to either have thumb shifters on the handle bars or end bar shifters but i cant find either, any suggestions please

You haven't looked hard enough. eBay has everything. Unless you have a Campi drivetrain, go with Shimano or Suntour if you can find them.

But they're 'spensive.

I recently acquired an old '84 Cannondale road bike (before they had model numbers) that had all original Suntour 2x6 with downtube shifters on it. Now it's a full Campi-Ergo-equipped 2x9 with FSA compact carbon crank, aero-bar mountain climbing road rocket.

Shimano 200GS STI, upshift lever moves freely but when released, it returns the derailluer back to the lowest gear. How do you take the shifter apart?

"Upshift lever" could be either one since they both shift up or down.

I'd make sure it's a lever problem before embarking on that project. Is the cable actually being controlled by the lever?

A simple web search for "Shimano 200GS STI assembly" yields all kinds of resources.

Another good start would be

Other web searches like "how to.." work, too.

Shimano CX200 mtb brake levers- can't seem to find locking screw to remove levee from handlebar.

This is from a different model but it's old school, too, so it probably applies to yours.

"The Shimano 200GS is held to the bar with a hidden screw like old ten-speed brake levers. Remove the cable. Squeeze the brake lever. Look for the head of a screw or bolt in the gap exposed by the open lever/perch."

With Shimano 6603 Group can you use Shimano 5703 shifters, or even triple Tiagra shifters?? Thanks for the reply

The answer is yes and no.

The 5703 shifters will work both derailleurs and match the 6603 group as they are both 10spd.

The Tiagra will not work because it is 9spd, it will functionally shift the derailluer but you will not be able to line up the gearing.

The rear shifter needs to match the number of gears on the back (cassette) in the case of the 6603 group that is 10spd, so you can use any 10spd rear shifter from shimano. The Tiagra is either an 8spd or 9spd depending on the model and will not work with the cassette. You can use a 6603 rear derailleur with a Tiagra group, as long as the shifter and cassette are both the same.

I purchased a bike online which has shimano shifters, I have no idea how to operate them. Can you help? A generic owners manual was included, which is no t specific to these shifters

Surf over to and find your shifters.

They'll be under Products >> (bike type) >> (group name )>> Shifters .... Tech Docs

Or swing by a Local Bike Shop and they'll be happy to assist you as well as start an ongoing relationship with you. Buy something there as thanks.

Shimano tiagra 9 speed shifters how to change gear

Go to

Search in drop down list to go to all tiagra items and identify your particular components. Shimano are good at numbering their parts and you should find the number you seek on the bicycle component. You will usually be able to download an exploded parts diagram and service instructions. The service instructions are prefixed by the letters SI.

8speed lx shifter to xt shifter

It depends.. Shifter cables are standard and the same one would work for both LX and XT shifters. If the old cable is full of grime etc, it is a good idea to run new cables - it will give you a smooth easy shift.

I am sure if you check you will find the manual for your model of shifter. Replacing cables is pretty easy.
