Question about Amana NDE2335AY Electric Dryer

2 Answers

Dryer is making a loud grinding screeching noise. When the dryer is on the noise comes and goes, but is continues to get worse. I cleaned out the dryer very well. I also opened the top of the dryer and inspected the drum. I moved the drum with my hand and noticed a metal on metal rubbing noise. Dryer is only four years old, local repair wants $80 to inspect then its is time a labor. I only paid $350 for the dryer, if I can't fix it myself, then I'll probably buy a new (non-Amana) dryer

Have the bearings on the dryer check so this will only get worse and do more damage

I have the same dryer. There are two rollers in the back and two slides in the front, all below the tumbler. I opened it up and thought one of the rollers was bad. Mine made grinding and squealing noises. In my case it wasn't the rollers, it turned out to be the idler-tensioner pully that the belt coming off of the motor goes around. You can buy them for $15 shipping on line and I haven't replaced mine yet so I don't know how hard it is. But I know it is this pully, because if I stop it by pressing on it the horrible squealing stops. YMMV.

Have you replaced your idler-tensioner? If so, how did you do it?

I replaced the pulley and fixed the dryer. It indeed was the problem, so for $15 bucks labor all is back working. My wife even had a chance to trade for a gas dryer (we have both hookups) but decided she likes the Amana too much and it's a matched pair.
It wasn't that hard, I took off the belt, removed the drum and then reached around the back of the motor and took out two bolts and swapped in the new part. The old one didn't really squeak as I turned it but the pressure of the belt must have made the noise. One of the bolts had a nut on it instead of screwing into a bracket so I had to use a wrench AND a socket but it wasn't that difficult if you are mechanically inclined.
    To do the job:
Make sure to unplug the dryer!, pop the top to get to the screws by pushing a flat screw driver below the top on the left and right sides of the front, take off the front be taking out the screws and disconnecting the wires on the right hand side (make sure you note which clips go where, (one is the light, one is the door switch and one is the hot), take off the lint trap holder and the screws, take off the belt, and then take out the drum. I don't have a blow-by-blow but just keep track of everything and you should be able to do it. I think it involved about 10 screws. There may be some guides on the internet. The belt was easy to put back on, just take pictures as you go along so you get things back correctly. I have also replaced the water pump on my washer, so I'm not afraid of tearing things apart.
Also, after I was done pulled the dryer from the wall and blew out the duct with a leaf blower and there was a lot of lint that came out so maybe the dryer was squeaking for a reason since there was way too much lint in my ducting (a plastic grocery bag full ).

Anyway, the horrible off and on screeching is likely this idler pulley on an arm at the back of the motor. The drum slides and rollers all looked good on my dryer and weren't the problem.

I meant for a $15 part and my labor for the cost.

How to stop dryer from making loud noises and tumbler from hitting inside walls

A dryer kit contains the wheels that the drum turns on, new glides, to keep the drum in place, and a tension pulley for the belt. You may also need a rear bearing. I'd say about $60 in parts and an hour or two & you'd be good to go.

I have a GE dryer that make a very loud screeching noise when turned on. The heavier the load, the louder the noise. The noise gets quieter as the load drys and the dryer barely makes it when turned on...
