How is the fan, any fins broke off? Could be bad motor bearings, problem with the armature.

Hello can you help me please? I have a Kirby G4 vacuum cleaner, It did work ok until it started to give off burning smell and lots of sparks from the brushes. I have changed these brushes, the motor still...

Some debris, even sand or dirt, probably got into the motor, causing damage to the armature. If this is the case, you will need to replace the motor. The burning smell from the motor is generally a sure sign of a bad motor.

Was hoovering when my DC04 made a funny high pitched noise then a whirring noise, this was accompanied by a smell of burning and a puff of smoke! Almost sounds like it might be a clutch slipping, is this...

OK... the DC04 doesn't have a clutch. My best guess is that the belt that drives the brush roll has broken. The smell of burning and smoke puff were probably caused by the motor suddenly speeding up when freed of its burden of driving the brush roll. For illustrated guidance on checking (and if necessary changing) the belt, go to www.dysonmedic.com then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "DC04 Belt Change Guide".
I hope this helps. If so, please remember to rate this response. If not, please post a reply and I'll try again. Good luck!

Vacuumed water - won't work

it sounds like the motor overload is cutting out.
it should automatically reset in time.
  • try removing the motor from the vacuum.
  • jump the motor. (power directly to the motor leads) be careful doing this! because once you plug it the motor will jump...keep your fingers from moving parts.
  • With the motor running, you will want to inspect the commutator -(where the carbon brushes push against)
  • if a blue spark is large and wrapping around the commutator then you will need to replace the brushes to begin with...in worse cases the armatures commutator would have to be cleaned with emery paper.... or armature should be replace. i think vacuum motors sell as a assembly...depending on what type of vacuum you have it might be better just buying a new one.

The motor makes a weird sound and starts to heat and smell like something is burning

If the motor sounds scratchy and is making a burning smell, or sparking you will need to replace the motor or the entire vac. Carbon brushes will rarely fix this as it is a high RPM motor

Motor slows down and makes burning smell

If the noise is coming from the canister motor, you probably have bad motor bushings. I had the same problem, replaced the motor and all was fine - only for one year. The problem is back and is due to the fact the motor is very high speed (to get good suction) and should be made with bearings, not bushings. I will not be repairing a second time as a $70 motor annually is a bit pricey, and yes it will get VERY hot. I will buy a new vacuum - not another Kenmore.

Electrical Burning Smell from Henry HVR200 Vacuum Cleaner

Hi! Highly unlikely that you need a new motor.  Highly likely that you need new carbon brushes.  The smell is caused by excessive sparking between the worn brushes and the copper commutator segments.  Most carbon brushes (and from memory I suspect this includes Henry's) have a copper wire buried in their last few millimeters, and you really need to change them before that becomes exposed.   The longer you run it like this, the more likely you are to damage the commutator, so change them sooner rather than later.  When you change the brushes, you can smooth off the commutator with very fine abrasive paper (the objective is to smooth it, not scratch it!), and then blow all the dust away (or **** it away if you have another vac, of course).  Incidentally, you don't say if you are using a paper bag in your Henry. Some people, because the top-hat filter is so good, try to manage without a bag.  This is false economy!  You should always use a bag. I hope this helps! I value feedback, so please remember to rate this response.

Burning smell from motor...what needs replaced?

Without the complete model number, I don't know for sure what componets you have, most likely is the motor. You will have to take the motor cover off and check it out. You can go to sears.com, click on parts, enter your complete model number, scroll down to cannister and it will bring up a parts list where you can order parts, also a diagram of the cannister.

Burning Smell

Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.

I returned it Oct 13 ,08 and got another dc 14 all floor. Now this one after 2 uses has the same problem only a larger crack in the brush and a small piece of the brush broke off. Very dissapointed.
