The top of the agitator pulls off. near the area where the two square holes are is a clear plastic piece. This pulls out as well. Then you will remove the bolt below this. From there the whole agitator can pull out. The issue is there are 4 plastic dogs near the bolt that have worn. You will need to seperate the 2 pieces to get at replacing the 4 dogs that look like a tear drop. I do not know a good way as they are 4 small crimped areas near the bolt that needs to seperate. I broke a couple and did my best at re-attachment. Quick job just take your time.

Washer doesnt apear to spin far enough to agitate properly on wash cycle

When we talk about washer agitation (agitate) it means the spin cycle. And it can get you agitated if your washer is not agitating.

We quite often have to use an agitator repair kit that contains several of the key components. The agitator is the tall vertical spindle, vaned or finned, in the center of the washer. A drive block connects the washer transmission to the agitator, it can be broken or loose. The motor coupling could be another prime suspect.

I found this info at:

Washer agitator wont turn!

what do you mean wont turn, do you mean when it spins that agitator is stationary ? in that case you need a new transmission. if you mean that in a dual action agitator that you can spin the agitator top left and right with no resistance / the bottom doesnt move either, then you will need new agitator dogs. remove the top of the agitator and i mean the cap, some have fabric softner dispensers on the top, which means pull the green tab up and the dispenser will come off, then you remove the cap to the agitator. under that is the agitator cam. you either need a 11mm socket to take it off, or you will need a 1/2 in ratchet and extension to take it off. after that it should be very easy to replace the agitator dogs

Agitator weak and ineffective

If this is one of the older "Belt" drive machines Id think the belt may be loose. If its a direct drive machine maybe the agitator is stripped? Can you push down on the agitator careful not getting fingers in the agitator vains see if you can stop it from agitating by hand and hear any differance in sound.

Whirlpool top loading washer doesn't agitate

The agitator dogs only make the top part of the agitator work. you can check the dogs by grabbing the top of the agitator and turning it right then left. If it doesnt lock when turned back the other direction they are bad. If thats not it, it could be your drive coupler. But its only the drive coupler if it doesnt spin. Also check the lid switch. But if its the lid switch Your washer will stay full of water and not drain out. But check your dogs. There are cheap and thats probably your problem.
