Question about FrancisFrancis! X5 Espresso Machine

Water is only coming out of the steam valve not the coffee maker part

No matter which button I push, water is only coming out of the steam valve. I can't get the machine to make coffee. I only got it two days ago. I made one cup of espresso and now water won't even come out of the coffee maker part of it.

I apologize if I offend you in saying this, but perhaps check the steam knob and make sure it is off, turned all the way away from you. If the knob is even a little bit engaged the water will bypass the brew group significantly.

Otherwise, your shower screen may be severely clogged, though I doubt this is the case if you have only made one cup of espresso. Give it a look though, and scrub it off with hot water and a grouphead brush--or a dedicated vegetable scrubber brush (my preference :)

When I push the button to make espresso the water comes out through the hot water/steamer? No coffee is dispensed but seems like all is working inside?

The water pressure is high possible because the grind is really fine, however water is not supposed to go through the valve unless it is open, you might have to replace the steam valve assembly.

Obviously you have problem with non return valves at the pump, they are built inn the pump.
  • Remove the filter holder, open the steam valve and command brewing coffee. If water comes from steam valve close it> continue brewing and wait the water from coffee group. After this procedure test it with coffee.
  • If testing with coffee is successful you may work with that pump but always be careful to not leave empty water container.
  • If testing isn't successful you need to change the vibration pump.

I fixed the same issue by pushing in the water knob "in" towards the machine. Machine than primes normally as the water flow is restored and it resets itself.

Sounds like the steam wand is getting blocked some where either at the metal end or in the parnello wand if you machine has one at the end of the steam wand, if both of those are clean then try this push in on the steam knob if that works then tap rod assemble or steam valve needs to be replaced, make sure to ask about the stainless steel valve instead of the plastic one.

Hi
When you are finished with steaming, try pushing the steam button again and then opening the steam valve to purge the steam. Do this until the water flows freely. You should hear the pump change tone. If you have a pre grind button, try that without putting any coffee in the pre ground chute, then push a medium coffee. Water should flow through the brew unit freely. If not, you are getting a blockage in the brew unit. If it does, your grind on the machine might be too fine. Change to a coarser grind and try again. It usually takes 3 cycles before the grind is in effect.

HI
If you have a pre-grind button on your machine, push it but don't put any coffee in the brew unit. Push any of the coffee buttons, and see if water will come out then. If it does not, then you have a plugged brew unit and the brew head needs cleaning. I have directions for cleaning.

Gaggia Espresso Machine bought about 10 years ago

  1. if it is fine ground coffee sometimes you get this result at machines.
  2. low pressure pump = you get water from it but only when handle is out or steam valve open.
  3. pump with non return valve broken = in this case you get water if you open tea valve during pump works. this pump can work long even she has 1 valve damaged, only when she is empty you need to open steam valve and leave pump running while you don't get water from valve.
