Yes this is because of the heat being taken between the GPU and the CPU you can fix it by stopping the heat build up using a good repair guide or you can send it in and they will fix it for you.

Picture freeze and pinstrip on the screen

When a Microsoft Xbox 360 console experiences a "general hardware" failure or "core digital" failure, three flashing red lights appear (known as the "Red Ring of Death") around the power button, in lieu of the four green lights indicating normal operation. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, in which the screen has strange, spontaneous graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, the sound is frozen and changed to a strange, static-like sound, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the general hardware failure occurs, when the user attempts to turn the console on, and the three red lights are seen and the console will not function.

this sounds like it will error e74 which will need a reflow
but dont overheat with a towel as this will cause more problems

My xbox stops while starting and theres a sound.. then the screen freezes and pixelates

This is very common problem . This is always caused by
a open connection under the G.P.U. spisificley the color /texture
data feed lines to hana/ana chip

You have some options .

1 do what's called a X clamp fix where you simply replace
the X clamp with screws and washer , and then force your
G.P.U. to over heat . This will more than likely get it running
but this type of repair tend to be short lived and warps the
board.

2 Have a local repair shop Re flow the G.P.U. and then
properly secure it to the heatsink, P.C. board. cost is
around 50.00-80.00 with a 90 day warranty.

There is a 3rd option It's called a C.C.A. aka G.P.U. clamp
this is a heavey duty bracket with a special pad that will
compress the G.P.U. back to the board and prevent warping

if you have any questions feel free to ask.

After roughly ten mins of play the screen pixelates and freezes

You might be getting ready to experience and E74 error or the RROD. I had 3 that did the same thing. The whine is the fans running 100% and then just turning off

Sound no picture on the xbox 360

Thats very strange, white pixels also called artifacts are due to the fact the GPU can't handle the graphics, but in the case of the xbox, that could be that GPU is overheating, causing the problems of the flickering white pixels all over the picture.

Xbox 360

Well thats very hard to do, the problem is that the xbox is overheating, more specific the GPU, thats why it freezes. The easy way would be to open your xbox an leave it that way, I have a xbox that works just when is all open with the parts expose. Very strange but it works. Also put some new thermal compound on your GPU and heatsink.
You could make the room where you play very cold so the xbox will not overheat or put some big fans near the xbox hoping they cool it down. Or stop playing like 15 minutes every 2 hours so it cools.

Strange happenings during gameplay

Does this happen with all games or just one. If it happens with all games then try moving the console into an area where it is better ventilated. The best way to do this is to prop the thing straight up and on a hard surface (no carpet).
