Here is the scoop! There are two (2) components to the fax machine, one is the scanner portion which is located just past where the paper you are copying or faxing enters the machine, separate the two sides and access the imaging plate, clean this area with denatured alcohol. Step two is to clean the toner and drum unit, get the mirror at the back of the toner and under the toner. If after this you are still getting lines on the prints you will have to replace the drum unit KX FA-84 about $85. Happy faxing, Ken

PLACE A PLAIN PIECE OF WHITE PAPER IN MACHINE AND TAKE A COPY. IF NO LINES ARE ON IT THEN THE LINES ARE COMING FROM THE MACHINE THAT IS SENDING TO YOU BUT IF U DO HAVE THE LINES THEN PRINT HEAD IS PROBABLY FAULTY OR DIRTY.
Try making a copy of something or printing a transmission report or journal from the "reports" menu. If the same problem is apparent on these printouts, then your drum unit or toner cartridge need to be replaced
If you can copy ok you have effectively ruled out your machine as you have used both the scanning and printing mechanism of the machine.
It will probably be the fax on the other end as if it sends a poor quality page that's all your machine can receive, a poor line can also cause problems if it is from multiple faxes. If so have your provider check the line (you probably hear static on the line).
Make a COPY and see how the copy comes out. If you see the same black vertical lines that other people are seeing, then you probably have something like whiteout on the scan glass.
Open the fax top cover where you feed your originals, and then look inside for a piece of glass about 10" long by 1/2" wide. Then I would try cleaning the glass with rubbing alcohol and also go over it again with windex.
After cleaning the glass, try making another copy to see if it has improved. If it has, but still has more lines, then try re cleaning the glass.
Hope this helps.
If you see black lines on the drum, it is very likely that the drum unit is bad. Replace the drum unit and rest the drum counter. If you wait too long, you will cause toner build up in the fuser and will cost yourself several hundred dollars to get it replaced. More in labor than parts.
Use a soft cotton or very soft paper towel and wipe the excess toner from the drun. If there are lines worn in the surface of the drum, then replace it ASAP.
Hi my mom has a brother fax machine. When printing it puts a vertical line straight down the middle. It takes the carbon paper and I noticed underneath there is a black nob thing that sticks up and that is whats making this line why and what to do? Thanks vicky
