I should mention I am getting a lens error message and there is sound when the lens is trying to open but no it looks like the camera is off in the picture window. I had had the camera for about 3 years and I have always kept it powered up so that's not it. Thanks though... any other solutions?

Base from the description of your problem it seems that the camera is not getting enough power , did you make sure that battery is fully charge? or better yet try a different battery for the camera.

Thank you for the additional information, something may have get inside your lens and cause the problem of this will be a mechanical problem on the lens mechanism of the camera and the only way to fix that is to have the camera dismantle and taking it to a service center will be advisable to avoid further damage.
But you can do these steps first to correct the problem.

Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button.
Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum .

You're very much welcome and good luck to you, by the way if still wont work after those steps have the camera check to a service center for repair.

My Nikon coolpix l820 the screen doesn't work on camera setting but does on the video camera setting

hi,
when the still camera works the shutter of the aperture and iris is opening for a limited time, if it opens without limit the excess light will enter in and the result will be blurry picture, if the shutter is not opening the picture will be dark. in movie mode the shutter will be always in opened state, so I think there may be fault in shutter.
in some cases a slight jerk giving to cam when you depressing the snap button will reset the shutter and will work normally.

Shutter won't open

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

The pictures are coming out black.

Sounds like the film is not exposed, shutter not opening. If possible fire the shutter with the camera open/back off, pointed towards a light source, if the shutter opens you will see the light thru the shutter/lens. If no light is seen then the shutter is stuck.

Shutter won't open/blaack when you look through lens

Your shutter may be stuck open... this will give the appearance of the shutter not opening as well as no image when you look through the viewfinder.

Open the back of the camera, as if you were replacing the film, and look to see if the shutter is open. If it is, you can probably see light coming through the lens when looking from the back of the camera.

If this is the case, you will need to find out why the shutter is stuck open.

Some cameras use a battery to activate the shutter, some cameras have a "bulb" setting that keeps the shutter open for long exposures.

Whatever you do, do NOT force the shutter... I might jiggle it a little bit to see if it will close, but I wouldn't recommend more than a slight jiggle.

While you have camera open, inspect the mirror. If the shutter is closed but the mirror is stuck "up" (to allow light to reach the shutter/firm), there is a chance that you would not be able to activate the shutter.

When i take it to develop film cames back the shutter not closing or opening ? on pic onit at all

I would check the shutter by:

1) open the film door
2) While looking into the camera, press the shutter button.

The shutter should open and then close. If the shutter doesn't open and then close, it could be stuck and my require professional help.
