Question about New Home L-373 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

I have NewHome Model 632 which has worked perfectly over the years. Now the mechanism inside will not turn over / turnaround. Adjusted belt tension, oiled & cleaned, balance wheel turns but no movement inside. Tried everything. This happened (stopped working) only after trying to sew something heavy - though that has never been a problem before. I'm desperate as in the middle of sewing something urgent.

My vintage kenmore hand wheel was frozen now it turns manually but not when I use the foot pedal, then it won't turn

Either you will replace the belt or have to adjust the motor/belt tension.
1. The motor can be loosened by a couple of bolts. This allows the motor to be moved to adjust the tension of the belt.
2. The tension can be adjusted properly by turning the motor on with the foot pedal; low speed.
3. While the motor is running move the motor in a fashion that will loosen or tighten the belt. The correct location will allow the motor to run at it's highest speed.
4. Re-tighten the bolts and retest the machine.

Why is the bobbin thread looping and catching on my sewing machine? The stitches are uneven, too.

Hi Sylvia,
Your problem is an un-matched tension of the threads. You mentioned doing an adjustment recently. That is the problem area.
If your bobbin thread develops loops on the top side of the fabric, you need to tighten the bobbin tension.
There is no easy method for this and you will have to do it slowly -
tighten, test, re-tighten, test.... until you get a near perfect stitch.
I haven't come across a portable device specifically designed to set thread tensions.

When using the knee lever, the thread tension appears to change. Is this a software problem or is there a hardware adjustment that needs to be made?

the knee lever should have nothing to do with the tension.
if the thread tension is changing without you changing it, then it sound like a software or computer part of the machine is messed up & needs to be serviced by a repair shop who have the tool to check it

I have the machine apart and am looking at the inside. all belts intact, press on pedal and belt whir, no motion on needle end. help?

The belts need to be reasonably tight but not like piano strings. Also if there is oil or similar on the belts this will stop the machine from turning over me friend.
Also, if the machine turns over by hand without any tight spots and will sew then your belts are either the wrong ones or need to be adjusted.
I hope this helps you,
Cookey.

Tension issues!!

this sounds totaly stupid, but I just have been dealing with this exact same issue for the last 3 hours- the resoultion? I took off the stitch finger and it started working perfect! I don't understand why this fixed my problem but in a crunch works great! Perfect even stiches and blades cutting evenly as well.

Skipped stitches

You will need to take your machine to a dealer and have it adjusted. Machines should be cleaned and serviced at least once a year. Needles should be replaced when dull. Skipping stitches can also be from using the wrong kind of needle. When quilting on cotton, use sharp needles, when sewing on knits use a ball needle. You can use a universal needle but they aren't perfect and will cause skipping on some fabrics.
