I have a Sony DSC-W100 digital camera. Well taken care of and never dropped. Turned it on with normal start-up musical tone but screen is black and has the word, "ACCESS" across the middle and the lens deploys and then stores repeatedly until turned off. Changing modes from the knob causes screen display to change from, "ACCESS" to "Power off and then on."

Hey, my camera the dsc- w80 did the same thing. When I turned it on, the lens opened 3-4 times and then it said "turn the power off and on again".
When the lens opened an closed, I pulled on it with my fingers and twisted it. I kept doing that: Turned the camera on and off, kept pulling and twisting the lens and now my camera works again!

Yes... same exact issue... I tapped the edge of the camera on my mouse pad while I turned it on , this gave it some momentum as the camera pushed out the lens. I would think that they get sticky or the tolerances are so close it's easy for the lens to get stuck shut.

I have a Cybershot DSC-W170 and recieved the same message. After reading and cautiously trying many suggested solutions in vain (air duster in and around lense, pulling the lens, tapping it on the side on a cushioned yet hard surface...) I read that my camera was now only worth $135 new, I resolved to buy a new Sony camera that calls for the same memory card.
THEN, I tried once last time...with the cameraI turn the camera on, and as the lens began going in and out at will, I hit it repeatedly with the side of my hand with more force than before since I knew had nothing to lose...and low and behold, the message (turn the power on and off again) did NOT come on. My camera is working again.
Thank you to everyone who has posted questions and suggestions!!!

I dropped my camera while the lens was open about 3 months ago, and today got this error. I had received it before and just took the battery out and put it back in which fixed it, but today that didn't work. When the lens came out upon opening I grabbed the lens and twisted it to the right, and then turned the camera on and off and it worked perfectly!

Thanks stuffdiduff!

My 4year old daughter dropped my DSC-W80 on my hardwood floor. The lens was stuck open on a angle. I did what you said turn camera on/off and play with lens. IT WORKED! camera is perfect again, well except for the scrapes and dings from its fall!

It means that a camera malfunction that you cannot reverse has occured.

You can try to press the reset button located inside the jack cover and then turn on the camera again.

Turning the camera on

I have had this problem with both a DSC-P72 and a DSC-P92 (same camera but 5 Mega pixel) They do need real good batteries, when the camera shut’s down I can run MP3 players or flashlights with those batteries for quit a while before those devices are dead.

I was traveling overseas once and installed “fresh” carbon batteries and the camera wouldn’t work at all. I had no photos on that trip until I found some alkaline batteries.

I even have bought 2 “dead” cameras to find that they work fine with REALLY GOOD batteries. So try it again before dumping the camera.
