Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The issue seems to be with a component going bad inside the unit, please post back with the manufacturers name and model no# of the unit.

The issue seems to be with the Y, Z and the control boards should also be checked. To start with you?ll need to open the back of the unit and check these boards for any blown/swollen/flat capacitors. Y board is located on the left looking from the back and Z board is the board that is on the right hand side and controller board is the one located next to the power supply board. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

    Thanks
    Rylee

Thanks for the pictures, just checked capacitors seems to be fine so the issue is either its not getting enough voltage, please test the connectors for VA, Vscan voltages

I'm assuming that you have tried to raise the level of the brightness from the image settings and it didn't helped.
In that case this is a hardware problem:
 - if the tv is a old CRT type or a plasma then it's a sign that the screen has aged. This is terminal since replacing the screen would cost as much as a new tv.
 - if the tv is an LCD then the CCFL tubes that generate the light are either undervolted because the inverter powering them is faulty or the tubes themselves are aged prematurely. Replacing the failed parts will cost you around $200.
The sound is caused by the expansion of the plastic case of the tv, extremely common on tv's that heat a lot like plasma's and CRT's. Nothing to worry about.

If you are sure it's in the electronics then it's a discharge because a board is deformed and too close to the ground. Not very dangerous but it may wear out other components in the long run so take the cover off start the tv in the darkness and look for the spark. When you have fond its origin just move that part away from any other parts of the tv.

Hi,

The pop noise and dull picture confirms that there is an internal failure. It would be really tough to speculate the exact cause. However, in most of the cases it is due to a bad IC in the power supply unit.If you have experience in repairing electronics, could read schematics and would be able to keep precautions, you could open up the TV. Locate the power supply board and on that you could see some bulged / fused / swelled / leaked capacitors. De solder them and buy the same value caps from Radioshack or Fry's. Re solder them properly and you could fix the problem.

Other than this, it needs more advance troubleshooting which would need other testing equipments. You could revert once you check the power supply board and we could further continue.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I understand your concern, however there is no reset button. If you could provide me with the make and model, i could tell you where you could buy a service manual and also guide you to fix this problem. Obviously, you need to take care of all the precautions.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Why is my screen is very dull?

Not knowing what make and model computer you're referring to makes it difficult to give you a specific reason. A couple known reasons for any laptop to have a dull screen are: 1. The brightness has been turned down (you should be able to turn it back up pressing the function key and one of the "F" keys simultaneously) or 2. The lamp and/or inverter are wearing out and producing less light output (which would require a screen or inverter replacement to correct)

My Vizio GV42L is fading to a dull whitish color after 2-3 minutes. I can still see the TV program I am on but the screen just goes to a dull whitish color. No boxes or anything popping up. Basical

Either its back light inverter board, or, the LVDS cable has the fault. First try by re-seat the LVDS cable, and check. Thus you can make sure about the fault. If you wish to get more details, check this link. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Selecting the view option, either to Mosaic /Timeslide, can be selected by the drop-down list, by the top left of the display window, will make surf easy. You can also do a search, by type in the brand name / model number / IC used, in the search box at the top right of the display window.

Screen goes dull at times

The dulling picture really sounds like a lamp failing. You would need the sony lamp xl-2100u
The ghost image may be easier to fix, sometimes as lcds age you will get a slight shift in a color. deep in the sony menu there is a parameter (menu-setup-imageshift) that will give you 3 levels of correction, this may solve this issue.

Sometimes turning the TV off and then back on again fixes the problem. At other times this correction is good for only a second or two.
