Ironically, I came to this site with the same questin you posted. I just found my manual. This is how tha manual tells you to steam rice:

Place one of the steamer baskets on the steamer base.

Place 1 cup of rice and 10 ozs of water in the rice bowl.

Place the rice bowl on the steamer basket and cover the steamer.

Set timer for approximately 32 minutes, depending on your taste.

Good luck!

Can I pile up foods in a steamer. Will they still cook?

It's best to put steamer foods in a single layer so that they cook through in an even way. Sometimes it can't be helped and foods have to be layered.

Other than vegetables, what foods can you put in a bamboo steamer?

: You don't have to stick to vegetables for your bamboo steamer. You can also do fish and seafood which stay wonderfully moist in a steamer. Meat and chicken are also easy to cook in a steamer.

If I do not have a steamer, can I still cook my corn on the cob. I really do not want to boil them but I do not have a steamer basket.

Don't worry. You can find an alternative to boiling your corn even if you don't have a steamer basket. Prepare the corn as you normally would, but fill the pan with only a quarter of an inch of water. Put the corn inside and seal the lid. It doesn't matter that the corn is touching the water as it isn't completely immersed and this will change the flavor and should leave it still crunchy and tasty.

How do I steam chicken in the steamer basket without it taking all day or tasting like rubber?

Rinse the chicken and pat it dry. If you are short on time then you can cut your chicken into smaller pieces. Place the steamer basket on top of a pot of water. It should be about half way full and the chicken shouldn't be immersed into the water but it's ok if it's touching a bit.

If you want to add to the flavor, you can add things to the water such as herbs, spice, lemon slices etc

Use a food thermometer to see when the chicken is cooked (it needs to reach at least 165 degrees).

Eat it fresh and hot with a salad or a starch like sweet potatoes.

I tried using a bamboo steamer but my food got stuck with the bottom of the bamboo tray. How do I avoid this?

The secret is to line the bottom of the bamboo steamer with lettuce or cabbage. This prevents it sticking. Make sure you put liquid over the food before you put it on top of the steamer pot.

What are bamboo steamers?

Bamboo steamers are baskets that have interlocking trays with perforated holes. The bamboo steamer is put on top of a pot of boiling water and the steam goes through the holes in the steamer and cooks the vegetables in a very subtle and healthy way.

Replacement basket for Black & Decker HS800 Flavor Scenter Rice Steamer

I would not recommend replacing just the plasic basket, too expensive. Once the plastic parts begin to fail, the uint has seen better days (our basket was still ok, but the unit started to leak out the bottom and the timer would stop during the steaming).

Bought a replacment B&D Handy Steamer, oval shape allows longer food items to be steamed (approx 10"x8"), water res & can be filler while steaming. Price was $25 in local hardware (Jan 09). Not worth fixing the old one IMO.
