Question about Navpod Simrad NX40 8.4" Display w/ Sounder & GPS Antenna MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAYS

1 Answer

I have recently installed a Simrad NX40 in combination with a BR 24 Radar. All parts of the installation worked just fine during my trip from Stavanger(Norway) to the Orkney Islands, and back, two weeks ago. Last week-end, when switching the NX40, it was not possible come beyond the "start-up page" on the screen. The Power-button was working when switching on the NX40, but there was no response from any other control when trying to advance. Neider was it possible to switch the set "off" by use of the Power-button. The NX40 is installed in a Scanpod attached to my pedestal guard the cockpit of my 33' sailboat, protected by a canvas hood when not in use. We've har some heavy rain during the week-end, but the protective hood is watertight, and so is the NX40 supposed to be. I would appreciate you best advice. Regards Torvald Hoset

    Hello Tim,
Thanks for quick answer. I can confirm that the unit was purchased in brand new condition for this season, installed and commissioned by myself (I'm a telecoms engineer). Everything worked fine during the "virgin voyage", and also afterwords. Now the unit has been left, well protected,in the sailboat cockpit for a week or so.
The reason why I do not claim a warranty service from my vendor, is the fact that I have purchased the equipment directly from USA.
Can this problem be related to ingress of humidity?

    Tim,

I've tried to switch off the breaker for my Instruments Supply several times, and repeatingly switching on the NX40. Same thing happens each time - I can switch on hitting the Pwr Button. The unit displays only the initial page, and I can not switch off by holding the Pwr Button activated.

There are no traces of moisture behind the screen.

I guess the conclusion will be to return the unit to the seller (WMJ Marine) to have it relaced or fixed.

The help I recived was absolutely useful. The respons from Tim was fabulous, and we concluded that there was nothing for us to do, as the NX40 was under warranty.
    Thanks a lot :-)

So it gets stuck on that start-up screen and stays there? And once it is on it never turns off? How old is this NX40 unit in general, many years or practically brand new? I know you said you just installed it, but maybe it was used somewhere else before? Let me know

It could be humidity related, but I doubt it, this unit should be air
and water sealed... I honestly think it has some kind of electrical
malfunction going on, there is no explanation for why a brand new unit
would act this way otherwise... It may have been just an anomaly for
it to work the first time and it "gave out" after that. Even if you purchased it from the USA and you are in another country you should still be able to return it. I would contact the seller you got it from and see if they can help you return it for a new one.

Also, I assume there is no condensation or anything strange like that inside of the screen that you can see, correct?

As far as I can tell based on your first part of the question, the unit came on and never turned off, were you able to get it off eventually? Did you try a full power reset in the boat and try firing it up again? Did it get locked up in the same spot?

    Let me know,
    Tim

That is correct, there really is no other explanation for this type of malfunction, it sounds for sure like there are hardware problems inside the device itself. If it won't even turn off it is probably an internal power supply issue, or even something like a single capacitor that is blown... But I would not open the unit up since it is definitely still under warranty.

    So sorry about that!

Thanks any way Tim - one never can trust electronics. That's why we still use magnetic compasses, logs and clocks for navigation :-)

Definitely correct good sir :) If you could, when you get a chance, please make sure you come back to the question here and indicate that I answered it successfully, or that I was helpful. There should be some way to "rate" my service. Otherwise I get no credit on the site here for the help. If you could add a note as to what exactly you had to click on so that I can tell people exactly what it is in the future that would be a great help. Either way, good luck!

Why does fuse blow when turn shower t warm hot ???

Probably your unspecified device has a heater incorporated and your breaker's amperage is too low for device working for hot water..
Check your electric installation.
If it's ok, your device might have a circuit problem. Check it using proper electronic testers.

I have just purchased a simrad tp22, it has arrived with no instruction book on how to install it, Can the tp be installed on either port or starbord, if so how is this acheived

when installing the unit --- you can mount it on the port or starbord side, and when all is in place you will need to go out and ' spin ' the boat ( this callibrates the internal compass ). there is a certain distance that the auto pilot needs to be mounted away from the tiller and sometimes a special bracket is needed to mount correctly. it has been years since I installed the one on my boat and not having the manual in front of me I don't want to just throw out numbers --- if I was looking at the boat and tiller I could tell you where to put it. also, if you are interfacing the unit with a GPS or Radar you will want to get the manual to make sure those wires get to the right place.
there is a company that I use to be associated with down in Seattle, WA ( The Off Shore store,, 206-632-3025 ) -- they are a Simrad dealer and they have all the manuals there and they would be more than happy to e-mail you the info that you are looking for,, they are nice people ( at least they were 6 years ago ). they can also order you any extra parts that you may need to make your installation easier. ((( tell them that Chris that use to work for Todd sent you to them -- you are sure to get special treatment then ))). enjoy the water and wind,
