Thanks, I have now tried that and its still not working. The printer I bought recently does but that has an installation disc, whereas the cordless mouse and usb extensions do not. I cannot understand it because my daughters laptop (not a Aspire) accepts and works them right away.

USB not recognised in computer section?

Try connect any battery-operated external USB device (eg MP3 player, etc.) to the USB port. Does it work? If does, so it is interrupted +5V power supply of USB port on your notebook.

My Acer laptop ASPIRE 5738 does not recognise USB Mouse, previously it is working fine. But if I attach other USB device it is working. It is only problem with USB mouse.

Do you have another USB mouse around that you can test with? It sounds like the USB port on your laptop is fine but the mouse is the issue.
If you can find a spare around and test or alternatively you could try to bring the laptop to a friends house and borrow their USB mouse temporarily.
My guess is that the other mouse will work fine. How many USB ports does this computer have? You can also try changing which port you plug it in to.

I can't get the Notebook to recognise that a mouse has been plugged into the mouse port. I have found out how to disable the touch keypad FN and F9 but not how to enable the mouse.

You may need to refresh the USB ports. Follow the instructions below. You do not have to disable the touchpad to use an external mouse.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

Where to i find an external mouse for a aspire 3680 laptop?

Hi:
Any office or computer store will sell a mouse you can use.
There are many brands to choose from, but I bought a Microsoft wireless mouse that has a small transmitter that plugs in one of my USB ports.

It works great!

Keyboard issues

Try reseating the notebook keyboard into its slot properly.

If that doesn't work any certain keys are only working before you get into windows then that tells me the kids may have spilt liquid onto the keyboad. As far as the usb ports recognizing an external keyaboard and an external mouse. it should be able to do that.

If the usb ports are acting funky then the kids may have spilt water onto the keyboard and the liquid fell into the motherboard. Try going into the BIOS and resetting defaults and see if that makes a difference as well and if it doesn't then the keyboard and motherboard may be faulty.

If you need any more help, let me know and I'll help you further.

USB ports not working

I think the root issue of usb ports not working is a problem with your USB port's drivers no longer communicating with your computer. This often occurs when you install an update to your computer's operating system.
