Good idea to do this. Most laptops will take any 2 1/2" hard drive you buy. There may be an issue with whether you can use a SATA or must only add an EIDE (regular hard drive). Still, the laptop may only be able to access the first 120 Gigs or 160 Gigs it depends on the laptop and hardware running your laptop. Call Acer and ask them. Once you know, go to NewEgg.com or ZipZoomFly.com or even TigerDriect.ca and you'll get a good/fair price with more than reasonable shipping and a solid guarantee if your part is damaged on arrival.
Memory is another issue altogether. Laptops are rather particular on what memory you can put in them. The only way to know for sure it to contact a manufacturer directly who also will sell it to you as well. You can google these solid memory makers and they will talk you through the upgrade: Corsair Crucial (Micron) Samsung
These all have lifetime warranties on their memory. Follow their instructions carefully and follow static precautions when handling memory (basically only handle memory by the edges and never touch anything else).
