Boot from a Linux Live-CD, recover all your files and launch the install program. In it when presented, select to use the entire hard disk - the Linux OS will be installed on it. Later if you want to you can reinstall Windows also on the whole disk.

My HDD Dell 300GB 15K 3.5" SAS, i used with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. The problem after installing the hdd total capacity its 279 How can manage this? Thank you

Hard drive manufacturers market drives in terms of decimal (base 10) capacity. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB) is equal to 1,000,000 bytes, one gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes, and one terabyte (TB) is equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Programs such as FDISK, system BIOS, Windows, and MacOS use the binary (base 2) numbering system. In the binary numbering system, one megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes, one gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes, and one terabyte is equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

Simply put, decimal and binary translates to the same amount of storage capacity. Let's say you wanted to measure the distance from point A to point B. The distance from A to B is 1 kilometer or .621 miles. It is the same distance, but it is reported differently due to the measurement.

Capacity Calculation Formula

Decimal capacity / 1,048,576 = Binary MB capacity
Decimal capacity / 1,073,741,824 = Binary GB capacity
Decimal capacity / 1,099,511,627,776 = Decimal TB capacity

Example:
A 500 GB hard drive is approximately 500,000,000,000 bytes (500 x 1,000,000,000).

500,000,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 476,837 megabytes (MB) = 465 gigabytes (GB)

I have a compaq witha samsung hd M/NSP2504C, S/N S09QJ1ULB30333. What are the speed and buffer specifications and which hard drive would you recommend for a compatable replacement or slave.

Hello
Samsung SP2504C is a 250 GB hard disk drive using the new SATA-300 interface, which allows a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 300 MB/s. Its main specs also include an 8 MB buffer, 7,200 rpm rotation speed and support to NCQ (Native Command Queuing). In this review we checked the performance of Samsung SP2504C installed on a motherboard using a regular SATA-150 port and also on a motherboard using the new SATA-300 port.
This very same hard disk drive is also available with a 200 GB capacity, being called SP2004C. Both belong to SpinPoint P120 series from Samsung.
Good LUCK AND DO RATE THE SOLUTION IF HELPS

If I try and format my LaCie drive through my computer its capacity shows as 9.99 MB why is that if I do format it (NTFS) will it have the correct capacity of 250G

You may have two or more partitions on this hard drive. If you delete all the partitions and then format the hard drive then you will have the full unformatted 250 Gb capacity.

During installation, windows XP only recognizes 131062 mb of my 320 gb hard drive

This is because "the original ATA specification used a 28-bit addressing mode, allowing for the addressing of 228 (268,435,456) sectors (blocks) of 512 bytes each, resulting in a maximum capacity of about 137 gigabytes" (wikipedia). To fix this try upgrading your computer's bios and enabling any bios entries for larger disks. Also make sure that you are running your operating system with all of the current updates.
