Question about Sony XM-1004GX Car Audio Amplifier

Open Question

What does the overcurrent light mean? The amp is only getting 12.7 V. One time the offset light came on as well but that hasn't happened again. I got the amp "broken" so I have never got any sound from it, BTW, the power light is also on during all these times. Thanks for any help at all.

SOURCE: amp overcurrent problem

Disconnect all speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amp and disconnect signal cables from the amp. If it powers up, the wiring needs to be checked. If it still shuts down (overcurrent), the amp likely has blown output transistors.

SOURCE: What does the offset light mean on sony xplod amp

THIS IS "DC OFFSET". MOST AMPLIFIER PROTECTION CIRCUITS REACT TO THIS CONDITION BY SHUTTING THE AMPLIFIER DOWN. THIS IS A CONDITION, NORMALLY BROUGHT ON BY SHORTED OUTPUT TRANSISTORS, THAT ARE TRYING TO PASS THE POWER SUPPLY DC CURRENT TO THE SPEAKERS, WHICH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, WOULD BURN THE VOICE-COILS IN THE SPEAKERS. MOST TIMES THIS WOULD BE CHARACTERIZED AS HOOKING THE SPEAKERS UP AND OBSERVING THEM SIMPLY POKING OUT OR IN CONSTANTLY WHICH CREATES MUCH EXCESS HEAT. THIS IS WHY THE AMPLIFIER WILL SHUT DOWN TO PROTECT THE SPEAKERS. YOU CAN TRY TO DISCONNECT THE SPEAKERS AND THE RCA INPUTS THEN POWER THE AMPLIFIER UP. IF THE DC OFFSET LIGHT STILL ILLUMINATES, THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE THIS UNIT REPAIRED. ONCE REPAIRED, BEFORE REINSTALLING IT, MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR SPEAKERS FOR DAMAGED VOICE-COILS, WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF FAILURE. OK. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE....V

WHAT DO IT MEAN FOR MY AMP TO READ DIAGNOSTIC

The diagnostic light, for this particular model, means that there is either a short circuit on the loudspeaker leads or there is an internal amplifier fault that is causing a DC offset. In order to determine which, disconnect all RCA and speaker leads while keeping the +12 volt, power ground and remote leads connected. Now turn the amplifier back on, and if the diagnostic LED lights up, the amp has an internal fault. If not, plug the RCA cables back in and reset the amp. If it goes into diagnostic now, the problem is with the input (either bad cables or a faulty head unit). If the amp is fine with the RCA cables plugged in, repeat the process with the speaker cables (one at a time). When you plug in the faulty speaker wire it will put the amp into diagnostic mode.

Overcurrent lights comes on whenever my amp is on

this can only mean 2 things, either your over working the amp, which means your amp is trying to push power that it don't have, and it's getting hot which is known as thermal mode. and the other reason can be that make sure amp rms. matches the rms. of your subs.

Its on over current

when the overcurrent light lights up, this means the amp is being run too hard or too loud. try cutting the gain back a little. i always hated putting in the sony amps that had those lights on it. it seems that when you turn it up and get it sounding good the light comes on.... if the overcurrent light is on all the time and it doesnt make sund....the amp could be bad. good luck.

I have a 2002 galant. for some reason every time i install a new amp in my car it stops working after a few days. any ideas?

Hello d4n_r1ch1,

You don't say what exactly happens to the amps.

Is it the same make and model of amp each time? Do they fail gradually? Do they overheat? Do they go into protection mode? Do any of the fuses ever blow before the failures? Are there any "burning" smells or melted plastic parts?

In any event, I'd suspect some kind of wiring problem is killing the amps. Inadequate grounding, operating below or above rated voltage, and overcurrent are the most likely causes for failure. You can check the ground and the voltage with a multimeter. Overcurrent is usually caused by operating the amp into too low impedance. Again, that is something you can check.

Hope this helps.

Sony Xplod Amp

well you might want to try using 30 amp atc fuses instead of 10 amp fuses on your amp, because you are getting an overcurrent from your alternator then from your battery. I have the same amp and you will find that your subbs will hit better too. also check on your ground wire from your amp as this also will cause the RED light to come on. :)

Need a lil ore help!!!

If the overcurrent of DC offset lights are not green, the amplifier probably has blown output transistors.

To eliminate other problems, disconnect all speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amp and disconnect signal cables from the amp. If it powers up normally (all lights green), the wiring needs to be checked. If it still shuts down, the amp likely has blown output transistors.
