Go into your CMOS settings by hitting the delete key while it is powering up and before it goes into windows. Once your there you can make the changes you need to and should be ok.

Computer clock will not keep time...when the computer shuts off, so goes the clock

Try this. Have the laptop turned off. Turn it on and see what key to press to enter Setup/BIOS. Once you get into the Setup/BIOS, fix the date and time in there, then save and exit. Boot back to Windows and fix it there also and you should be good from there. If not, then the motherboard battery is dead and you need to get that replaced.

Cheers!

Windows will not start! keeps returning to the screen that allows for SAFE Mode start-up etc. but that is as far as I am able to get over and over. Is there a bios update that might recover my system?

For this thing you can do one thing go to the safe mode with networking option and do a system restore to an earlier date and i m sure it will load. And doing a bios update would be a handy one go to hp.com website and download the latest version of bios and update it to your computer.
