SOURCE: Batteries in my Rino 120 don't last very long

3 AAA batteries won't last long if your transmitting in higher powered GMRS. But if your not getting much time out of the batteries when just using gps, then it could be a few things. 1.. If your using rechargables you could have a bad cell thats no longer taking a full charge. 2.. if your using regular batteries use alkalines that are of good brand. 3.. The fact that the unit seems to be running hotter than usual could be another clue. A failed integrated circuit will usually draw alot more current. Usually what will happen in this situation if your hooked up to a power supply insted of batteries is the unit in question will get warm an draw more current slowly... the warmer it gets the more current draw... if you were using this on a power supply what would happen is it would eventually draw so much current that it will pop a fuse. In your situation your running on batteries.... the increase in current draw will just drain the batteries faster. Its a common problem with electronics... usually you can tell its a failed integrated circuit (IC) because the piece of electronics will blow fuses.... but not fast... sometimes it will take an hour for the IC to heat up enough and draw the appropriate amount of current to "pop" the fuse. At that point the IC is drawing alot of current. Thats a big clue.... a dead short pops fuses fast.... a bad IC will take a while to pop a fuse. Try checking the batteries as well as the advice in Solution#1 by sgregg. What could be happening is there is an IC that has gone bad inside the unit. The IC is running hotter and drawing more current as it heats up... causing the batteries to drain. Its just a guess.... its hard to speculate since I can't test the unit myself. Check the simple stuff first like batteries. Take care Bra

By reading a number of forums, I've found that there was a WAAS satelitte update (bug), that causes this foul up.
The only solution I've been able to arrive at is DISABLE the WAAS feature, as no Garmin Update/patch (for Rino120) has been made available.
To shutoff the WAAS feature press your [Page] button until you arrive at the "Main Menu"
go down until your on the "Setup"(hammer)
go in (by pressing in, on the directional button)
go down until your on the "System"(gears)
go in (by pressing in, on the directional button)
go down until your on WAAS, go in and select the Disabled
go up to the "X" (top right) press it, then you can [Page] button anywhere you want from there.

Wonder what WAAS is?

Take care.

PS- Garmin if you read this....I would like to have my WAAS back, and since I registered for updates, back in 2005, why didn't I get an email from you telling me about this issue (when it happened and provide a solution - at the same time :: even a work around as I've posted here)

Have you upgraded from Software version 3.2? Version 3.3 addresses a memory overflow problem when receiving two or more WAAS satellites.

Garmin Rino 110 Posted by nightjar on Jun 29, 2008 My two 110's have same problem. With two new sets of different brand NiMh rechargeables the problem still exists. Both units get warm and flatten the...

Re : " Both units Garmin Rino 110, overheat and flatten the batteries within 2 hours"

That is a factory defect related to a bad contact inside the unit.

If you contact garmin and insist to talk to a supervisor (second line) you can have both Rinos replaced.

Ensure it is not a bad batteries problem first testing a replacement battery, both batteries may have deteriorated at same time.

Buy first a replacement battery at Garmin eTrek, Rino 110/120 NiMH Battery,

If that does not solve the problem call Garmin:

LED does not work

you have damaged the screen and it will likely need replacement. there is one other possibility... you may have loosened a connector inside the radio... tap it gently with your finger to see if there are any changes in the display

I believe its 3AA's and it SHOULD last 15 hrs of life. You should probably check the terminal heads and clean them real good you might be shorting somewhere in the connection.
