How To Set The Jumper Setting On Samsung (PATA) Hard Disk Drive?
    July 13th, 2009

Setting The Jumper On Your Hard Disk Drive
Use the common jumper settings for Samsung hard disk drives that are listed below. Please verify the jumper setting by checking the label on your hard disk drive.

Important: If you partitioned and formatted your hard disk drive, with the General or 32 GB pin setting, and now need to use the opposite pin setting; remember to partition and format the drive again after changing the pin settings.

Configuring your Hard Disk Drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) – Setting the Jumper

    • If this is the only HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Master.
    • If this is the second HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Slave.
    • If this is the second HDD in your computer, and the first drive is set to Cable Select, set the pin setting to Cable Select.
    • If you are replacing the HDD in your computer, set the jumper setting to match that of the drive you are replacing.

    Cable Select:

    • This setting is the default setting for PATA/IDE hard disk drives. With the Cable Select jumper setting, the BIOS determines whether a hard disk drive is Set as Master or Set as Slave by it’s position on the UDMA cable.
    • If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the black connector on the end of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Master for that PATA controller.
    • If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the grey connector on the middle of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Slave for that PATA controller.
Note: When using Cable Select, your system must meet the following conditions:

      • Your systems host controller must support Cable Select.
      • Your hard drives must support Cable Select.
      • Your cable must support Cable Select.

      Set as Master:

    • Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Slave, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
    • Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

    Set as Slave:

    • Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Master, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
    • Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

    32 GB Clip Setting:

Use this on computers manufactured before November 1998 when either you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disk drive controller failure", or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing a new drive. This occurs when the hard disk drive is too large for the BIOS to support.

SOURCE: Master slave jumper settings on 250gb Maxline Plus II SATA

There are no master/slave settings on SATA drives because each drive has its own cable. The drive order is determined by what SATA port they are plugged into, or by the BIOS configuration.

NEED JUMPER SETTINGS FOR MASTER HARD DRIVE

Set The Jumper Setting On Your Hard Disk Drive

The hard disk drive will be detected as 32 GB if the jumper is set to the 32 GB clip pin setting. The common jumper settings for Samsung hard disk drives are listed below. Please check the label on your hard disk drive for the correct jumper setting.

Important: Use the alternate jumper setting listed below under General Pin Setting. After changing the jumper, partition and format your hard disk drive.

Configuring your Hard Disk Drive (Master, Slave, or Cable Select) - Setting the Jumper

If this is the only HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Master.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, set the pin setting to Slave.
If this is the second HDD in your computer, and the first drive is set to Cable Select, set the pin setting to Cable Select.
If you are replacing the HDD in your computer, set the jumper setting to match that of the drive you are replacing.

Cable Select:

This setting is the default setting for PATA/IDE hard disk drives. With the Cable Select jumper setting, the BIOS determines whether a hard disk drive is Set as Master or Set as Slave by it's position on the UDMA cable.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the black connector on the end of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Master for that PATA controller.
If the hard disk drive jumper is set to Cable Select and is connected to the grey connector on the middle of the UDMA cable, it is recognized as Set as Slave for that PATA controller.

Note: When using Cable Select, your system must meet the following conditions:
Your systems host controller must support Cable Select.
Your hard drives must support Cable Select.
Your cable must support Cable Select.

Set as Master:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Slave, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

Set as Slave:

Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable with a hard disk drive Set as Master, jumper one hard disk drive to Set as Master, and the other to Set as Slave.
Use this setting if you are installing an additional hard disk drive to a single UDMA cable and the Cable Select setting is not recognized.

32 GB Clip Pin Setting:

Use this on computers manufactured before November 1998 when either you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disk drive controller failure", or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing a new drive. This occurs when the hard disk drive is too large for the BIOS to support.

If after performing the troubleshooting procedure listed above, the full capacity of your hard disk drive is not recognized, click here for information about obtaining a system BIOS update. If you are unable to update your BIOS, another option would be to create a second partition with the remaining unallocated disk space.

Can we use Excelstor Gstor as a Slave Drive? If yes, how? What is the jumper setting required?

To configure the hard drive as a slave drive, you need to set a jumper on the hard drive to SL (slave)
The other jumper settings are MA (master) and CS (cable select).

I have a maxtor quantum fireball plus as 20.5 hard drive. i want to set it to slave. how do i set the jumpers?

on maxtor drives, you will find the jumper within a cluster of 9 pins. if you look on the bottom of the drive, on the circuit board, the pins should be labeled "ms" "cs" and such. the "ms" and "cs" stand for "master" and "cable select". you rarely use the true "slave" setting anymore, more often than not' "slave" drives are set to "cable select" and are attached to the middle, slave position on the ide cable. in "cable select" mode, the cable decides what device is master and what is slave, depending upon the devices' position on the ide cable.

to set the drive to "slave", set the jumper so that it only has 1 pin under it, and doesnt actually jump any pins, or just take the jumper out. only use the "slave" setting if the "master" device on the same ide cable is actually set to "master".

if the master device is actually set to "cable select" then you will have to set the slave device also to "cable select" and the middle position on the ide cable will set it automatically to be a slave. , instead of using the jumper to make it the "slave".

to set the drive as "cable select", which is what i would recommend, use the jumper to connect the 2 pins which are labeled "cs", the 2nd position from the bottom position on most older maxtor drives, and attach this hard drive to the middle connector of the ide cable.

How do i configure this hard drive for a 'slave' ?

Hello

Ok, you ill be able to see the jumper configuration on the hard drive itself. Here is an example on what the jumper diagram will look like on a hard drive.
8b2e9a6.jpg

Now, all you need to do is to have a look on your hard dive and see where you need to place the jumper for the slave configuration. Here is what a jumper looks like.

After you have done this, you only need to plug the hard drive into your pc.

Hope this can be of help.

Kind regards

What happen if i dont put jumper in a hard a hard drive?

If you don't put jumper in harddrive is detects it as cable select means if you connect your harddrive to middle socket of ide cable and then it detects it as slave but if you connect it at the end of ide cable it detects as slave. But make sure that otehr device is not set as master only 1 device is set as master or slave .
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Need IDE jumber settings.

There is a little jumper block on the rear of a DVD. by IDE connector. on the case above there will be a Table marked . Master: Slave: CS. Now, you must set the jumper as to your drive's position. IE: Master or Slave, Master is on the plug at the END of the ribbon, the Slave is on the "Other" one. Accordingly the Master has the Master Jumper ON, the Slave the Slave Jumper ON. CS is Cable Select. It isn't all that used.
