How to secure the wireless network

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

I just password protected my D Link router. I am now only able to connect to the internet on one device at my home. It is a new computer using Windows 7. However, my old computer, using Windows XP, as well...

you'll need to provide that password to all of your devices so they can get online. What you've done with the password is that you added a layer of protection so people who dont have that password cannot connect to the internet via your router, and this is why all other devices cant get an IP, because they're recognized as intruders by the router.

How do i install a password in my wireless rauter, to prevent intruders access? Linksys/Cisco 192.168.0.1

Hi Friend,

In order to resolve the issue please follow the steps:

1.Please connect the router with a computer
2.Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the Web browser(e.g-Internet Explorer) and hit enter
3.Enter the Username and the Password (defualt password is admin and leave the user name blank)
4.Now on the Router setup page click Wireless tab and fill the sections as mentioned:

Wireless Network Mode-Mixed
Wireless Network Name-As per your choice
Wireless Channel-6-2.437GHZ
Wireless SSID- Enabled and click Save Settings

5.Now click Wireless Security tab.
6.Select the Security mode as WEP and fill the sections as mentioned

Default Transmit key- select 1
WEP Encrypion-64 bits 10hex digits
Key1-Enter 10 digit or 10 letter password(e.g-your telephone number) and click Save settings.

Now turn the router for 30 seconds and after that turn it on.
Try to connect your wireless devices, it will ask for a password which will determine that your network is secured from intruders.

I hope this will resolve the issue.

Regards
Chiranjeet

I cannot get password set up to keep unwanted

Please turn off the "broadcast" feature of your Linksys router. This will turn off the "advertising" your router is currently doing, allowing your neighbors to find your network.

Next, you can set your router to allow only certain MAC address devices to use its features. You will need to find out the MAC address for each of your devices.

Next, you will have to setup a password situation to allow the logon. Currently, your scheme is not working. I'm not sure why.

I use Network Magic for my network management duties. It is a free download and eval period after which Cisco (maker of Linksys) would like for you to purchase a license. After the free eval period, Cisco allows you to continue to use the program but not all features unless you pay. I use the paid pro version and I love it.

NM will track intruders, help you share resources, repair broken connections and many other tasks.

P.S. There are no intruders in a wired system! If you can use a wire, instead of wireless, you will not only be more secure but faster as well.

I hope this information helps you ... Thanks for posting your Q at FixYa.com

I got a new laptop it does not locate any wireless network

hi thanks for using fixya!

You can use a wireless network to share Internet access, files, printers, and more. Or you can use it to surf the Web while you're sitting on your couch or in your yard. Plus, it's easier to install than you think.

For Windows XP users, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not required for wireless networking, but it does make things much easier. Service Pack 2 also helps protect you against hackers, worms, and other Internet intruders.

Router lock

Setting up your wireless network to encrypt the data so intruders can't see it involves choosing from several methods. Take a look at pages 49-55 of this on-line manual (link below). It will give you more information than you ever wanted to know about choosing an encryption method and entering the "keys" on your router. If you find this terribly confusing, just choose either WEP64 or WEP128 and ignore the other sections. There are specific notes for MAC users on pages 53 and 55. Hope this helps!
