Question about Samsung Televison & Video

7 Answers

Samsung hl s5687w dlp tv . Tv has been making noise on start up. sounds like a power relay making contact. It does this twice and the tv operates normally.tonight I started it and it is making a sqealing noise frequently and the picture dims as it happens. Don't know if the power supply is going or if i have a different problem. tv's exhaust seems warm.

I am familiar with electronics and can do the repair. Do these caps need to be discharged or just let them bleed off? also what is a color wheel what does it do where can I get one and about how much?
    Thanks BK

    Dear Best,

Well theres a 120 bucks down the tube replaced the color wheel and the tv does the same thing. the color wheel swap was simple. I still think it is a power problem. The tv makes two loud clunks when it starts. The picture dims as it makes a squealing noise sounds like a weak contactor on a motor. Is there a replacement supply available for this set or do you have another solution?

    Thanks BK

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

replaced the color wheel in this set still have the same problem. problem is the set fires makes two clunking noises and starts. the set has picture and audio. set makes a noise like a weak contactor. the picture dims slightly as it makes the noise. Turning off the tv it continues to make the noise until I unplug it from the wall. I have tried multiple outlets in the house to it no change.

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

Best, Are these mercury arc lamps in these tv's? I have the back off and can't pinpoint the noise. If the lamp was bad would it make noise or would it be the lamp ballast. I have checked for loose connections and the power supply board looks fine no discoloration of the caps.

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

i replaced the color wheel no change. power is fine. don't know where to check output of pwr supply so I can't tell you the output voltages. noise continues after tv is turned off. it makes the noise for a few minutes and then stops.

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

this sure looks like an arc lamp to me there is no array of leds. I pulled the lamp out and looks at it. single bulb with a lead from the tip of the bulb going out to the side. Also got a long screw driver and used it as a stephoscope to listen the color wheel bearings does not seem that it is the color wheel. The sound the set is making is like water running through a pipe in the attic more than a squeal.
the leads that go to the lamp look like they may have been hot at one time. they have a little brown to them. it is not making a clicking sound. What noise does the set make if the engine is going away?

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

eliminated the color wheel from the equation I unpluged the contacts from the color wheel and started the tv same sound. I also pulled the lamp out and started it. same sound continuasly. I am wondering if it is the supply or ballast how can I check these?

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

what is the squence of events that happen when the set starts up?
I active the tv and even when it was new it would make two sounds and the audio sound that indicates the tv is on. It really sounds like a relay or contactor to me wish I had the schematic for this thing

  • bkperf May 24, 2008

    Thanks Best,
Going to order the ballast from the parts store. Won't know if that is the fix until next week. It sure seems like it though. I'll let you know how it goes. thanks for the help again.

I just replaced the ballast and power supply still did not fix the problem. what else could this be? I hope it is not the light engine as it is 800.00. what are the symtoms of a light engine going?

    Please help!!!!!

  • bkperf Jun 10, 2008

capacitors where? It is very hard to tell where the sound is coming from. I can take out the whole chasis and remove covers there are a few. What are the symptoms of the light engine going away. the price I stated for the light engine is from the parts store.800.00 Definetly going to have a new tv when I'm done.
Are the capacitors on the board for the light engine? also what is a DMD board?

    Thanks BK

  • bkperf Jun 11, 2008

Thanks for the help again. The caps that i have seen all look good so far. My commute and work takes most of the day up so I'll have to look at it again on saturday. The chasis is so compact that it sounds like the whole electronic rack makes noise. Too bad they don't make an extender to have it out of the tv when its running. When I had the cover on the back of the tv it did seem hot but now that it's off its getting some air flow so I really don't know if it is running hot. This tv was a display model at circuit city and was probably run 24/7 for a while. The local tv guy told me it was the color wheel that I replaced. He basicly was saying since i did not buy it from him that it would not work. But I eliminated it from the equation by unpluging it. I usualy frown on shotgun troubleshooting but without a schematic and any real knowledge of tv's I guess this will have to do. The guy wants 65.00 just to show up and I know how these guys operate. he'll think im stupid and try and overcharge me as usual. I will take out the chasis again and remove all the covers to see if I can see any discolored or bulging caps. I do have a meter so I can check for shorts. The symptoms still seem to me a power problem and the noise reminds me of a bad connection that is struggling for voltage and drawing excessive current. I'll give you an update on saturday thanks again.

Check power supply use stablizer
afterwards same problem continue plz
The squealing noise is a defective color wheel. you will need to replace it. If you are good with tools, this shouldn't be hard but you need to be careful of the the capacitors if you plan on doing this yourself. Please open up the back panel and see if you here the exact location that it is coming from. The color wheel is usually located towards the bottom of a projection tv.

you can discharge them with a high wattage resistor of 5-50 ohms. Make sure you check with a voltmeter after you do this. They should also discharge on their own quite well but will take about 8 hours, and then may not be fully discharged so always test them.

I always give people the following link to help them replace the color wheel

I hope you find this useful, let me know if you need anything else

oh yeah, the color wheel filters the light before hitting your screen, just so you know and like the link I posted said, partstore.com sells them and so do a few other sites, good luck

well, at least you won't have to worry about replacing the color wheel in the near future, sorry about that not being it. thanks for the update though.

Yes you can get a new power supply, give the following websites a look or a call and see which one will give you a cheaper price

    or

May I ask it the capacitors still look good and whether you have looked for loose connections on the board seeing as you are familiar with electronics I assumed that you had checked these things over but you may have not. May I also suggest having the back panel of the tv off while this noise is occuring so that you can see exactly where the noise is coming from. thanks

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 24, 2008

I believed before that it was the color wheel since they make a high pitched noise when the bearings go bad but please see if you can pinpoint the exact location of the sound so that I can help you replace whatever part is making this.

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 24, 2008

Your tv uses the LEDs instead of the older arc lamps. the ballast would make a noise not the lamps, the lamps sound fine with your description of the dimming. The ballast is supposed to fire up the lamps but since you have picture that should be fine, I would definitely think the lamps are fine. Perhaps it is the ballast, if it is making a fast clicking sound then it would mean the ballast is weak but since it is firing the lamp, I would think it is fine and that it must be your power supply. Please try again to narrow the noise down, I would think it is coming from the ballast but your power supply could be to blame rather than the ballast even if the noise comes from the ballast

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 24, 2008

the two sounds you would hear are the ballast firing the lamp before the audio sound

And yes it is a one bulb LED lamp

If you have a meter you should be able to test the power running through the devices at the connection points

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 24, 2008

these lamps are rated for 20,000+ just to let you know also so I really don't think it will need to be replaced

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 24, 2008

no problem, I hope it is the ballast and not the power supply for your sake as either or could be causing the ballast to do this and I really don't want you to be spending too much money fixing this. At least this tv should last a long time after replacing these parts.

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 06, 2008

Before buying anything else, can you tell if the sound is coming from the area with the light engine, because if it is, then I really will have bad news for you as it can make a noise if it is going bad but I don't think you should buying anything else unless you know for sure where the noise is coming from. Perhaps you should get someone else to come and listen to it or possibly have a tv guy just come and listen to it as I can't. The good news is that you can probably get the part for a few hundred dollars less from partstore.com if it is the light engine.

Let me know what you think

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 06, 2008

Another thing to check is the capacitors, take a look and make sure the top is smooth and not bulging and let me know if these look fine.

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 10, 2008

capacitors will be on basically every board on the tv

DMD - Digital Micromirror Device which is an optical semiconductor that helps produce the picture on the screen

Dimming and changes in picture are symptoms of the light engine going bad which is pretty rare on a set especially with samsung

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 10, 2008

Does the light engine seem abnormally hot? I really don't want you to order anything unless it is a sure thing but it sure does look like the light engine may be the problem since all of the normal fixes did not work.

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 10, 2008

I have found few instances where this tv experiences a light engine failure but since there are some, not many, you could be one of the unlucky ones I'm sorry to say, let me know if you want to know anything else

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 10, 2008

many times a shadow appears on the screen with samsung tvs which identifies a problem with the light engine, the noise is not common with a problem with the light engine but your problem is unique I think.

I have Samsung DLP TV 50 inch HL-P5063W

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

HAVE GRINDING OR HIGH PITCHED SOUND?

When we turn the TV on, a red light starts to blink but no image or sound is displayed. How can this be fixed?? And What is causing this? my TV model is HL-s5679w

The Blinking light is an error code, most likely you just need to replace the bulb which is fairly easy, there is an access panel on the back and you should be able to replace your self. A new bulb should include basic instructions here is a link price is $110

Samsung HL-S5687W dlp tv, the picture is darker than usual and getting darker by the day

Hi

Well for what you describe it sounds like the symptoms of a worn out lamp giving you the last kicks, basically the the lamps are design to go for 6,000 to 8,000 lamp hours if they're Phillips and a generic lamp could give you 3500 to 4500 lamp hours so with this in mind you could search for a new lamp at Discount-merchant.com or you can go to Ebay also you can go to www.fixyourdlp.com for more troubelshooting

Please rate this if it was helpful.as I do this for free.

You need to go into setup and see what TV Mode you are in.

Movie is usually darker then normal. Do you still have the manual?

My samsung dlp tv hl-s5687w tv turns off on it on.

I had the exact same problem with my TV turning off for no reason. If those two lights are blinking in the front it means your TV thinks the lamp door is open and shuts down. In my case i had to open the door and adjust the spring lever because it was not making good enough contact.

Hope that helps.

Samsung DLP

try this and see if it makes a difference
open the lamp door look for the blue switch(bottom left i think)
take the loose wire(blue and white) wrap it over the switch to hold it back
and while your back there make sure you dont have a lot of dust blocking the vent on the back cover
