Question about Craftsman Garden

Open Question

I have a sears craftsmen lawnmower with a 6.75 hp #640020B Tecumseth carb and my problem was that the float pin would stick and my engine would flood with gas. My solution was just to buy a new carb and replace which I did but now it runs way too fast and I need to know how to adjust for this speed.....please help.

SOURCE: hard starting and poor running

Try running the engine without the filter and check if the idle would smoothen, maybe a little high. If problem persist, then it would be fuel delivery problem. If the idle is constant (but high), then some sort of blockage on the air filter or a vacuum leak.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: I have a Brigs&Straton 6.5 Quantum lawnmower will not stay running. I can keep it running by restricting the amount of air entering the carb with my finger (choking it) The mower will start if it

the problem is in your carb.,at the bottem of the carb. there is a bolt that threads in to the carb.pinch off the fuel line so that no fuel comes out after the fuel bowl is off the look into the bolt that you took off.there should be a hole oppisit the head of the bolt.there are also two holes that go through the sides.these holes are the fuel intake to the carb, the hole in the center is the fuel nozzle.most likely you have dirt blocking this hole and not letting the motor get enough fuel to run.thake some carb cleaner and spray it in the hole.take an air hose then blow the nozzle out.while you have the screw out take the bowl off and check to see if there is any water or dirt in the bowl.after cleaning.reinstall the bowl and start mower again.should be running ok now.if not let me know and i'll guide you through another fix.let me know if this helped or not................

SOURCE: mower surging

let it surge, it will usually get better as it warms up. These 6.5 Hp engines are fine except they have an cheap badly designed carburator. Nothing can be done about this problem. They all surge eventually.

Lawnmower leaks fuel from carb

It sounds as though your float and needle are stuck open or not closing properly, thus flooding with fuel. However it is hard to give exact fix/problem without a model number of the engine to be able to see the specs and design of the carb.

My 19hp engine is flooding out the motor. if i take the bottom line off the carb it will run for a minute or more and then die. with the line on it floods immediately

Sounds loike the float is either stuck open or there is dirt in the carb. You might want to take the carb off, remove the float bowl, and inspect the float and needle valve. Spray the carb with carb cleaner, especially where the needle valve seats and all of the passeges inside. I would suggest getting new gaskets because the old ones usually break when they are removed. I hope this helps, Good luck.

The engin will start and turn off. Then will not turn on at all.

Im not sure if your saying it wont restart or not even turn over. If it wont start but turns over it sounds like the carborator float may be sticking and flooding out the motor. If this is the case normally after leaving it sit awhile it will drain down and you will be able to restart mower. If your not a do it yourselfer a small engine mechanic would be able to take the carborater apart and clean the jets and or replace a float that may have gotten a pin hole in it. You could try spraying in a small amount of carb cleaner in carb when running to see if it cleans jets.

Raw fuel coming from muffler when i crank it it is a 16.5 hp kohler eng

Typically this is caused by a sticking float in the carburator. It's essentally flooding itself out. You can take apart float bowl and clean the carb. For the float specifically, remove the pin that hold the float on and then remove the needle valve below that. If you want to go all out and do it right, get yourself a carb rebuild kit. They are very inexpensive and easy to do yourself

Flooding in do I check the float?

Take the carb off and remove the screws that hold the float on. Once you have that apart, the float should be pretty obvious. Toward the back of the float (where it hinges) there is a small spring and a pin. Orientate the carb in it's normal position the float should be freely in the down position (this is when fuel enters the carb.) the pin should be pushed up. Now, push the float up (this is when fuel stops coming into the carb). The pin should fall. There should be some tension (very little) that makes the float want to return to the down position. If anything is out of order, order a carb rebuild kit. If the carb is flooding, this means that the float is getting stuck in the down (open) positon and not floating. This happens very often with older floats. Newer ones are plastic and won't get fuel logged or covered in suit. Let me know if this helps and what happens. Good luck

I have a sears lawnmower that was flooded recently. I bought a tune up kit and installed it. I changed the gas and oil also. when I poured in the gas it all came out the air filter. What should I check...

carburator float is stuck in the open position allowing fuel to continiously run / drain out the fuel tank into the carb and then overflow into the venturi of the carb into the engine and out the air filter. Bottom line the carb needs to be disassembled cleaned and rebuilt
