Question about Barbeques Galore Bar-B-Chef Deluxe S/S 31 on Cart -175677 Grill

I'd like a recommendation on converting this charcoal grill to gas. It kills me, but we're moving to a condo that won't allow charcoal grills. It's an amazing stainless unit, and I'd much rather get it converted than hunt for a gas grill of similar awesomeness.

Hoping for a solution that's either specific to this model (Barbecues Galore's Bar B Chef), or general enough to work in any BBQ enclosure.

I appreciate the suggestion that this might be more trouble than it's worth, but it's an outstanding grill, and I'd hate to have to give it up.

Hi There,

If your Condo was in Texas I'd think any small child there could do it, considering the way they feel about Barbecue there. Your manufacturer doesn't make a conversion kit because they got into a huge recall with some of their gas fired grills.

This might just a fabricating a new unit by fixing up the burners into the present grill.
To set the grill on the face plate of the charcoal tray the gas burners , grille burners must be set into the tray with the control mounted inthe frontand the gas line below the tray.

Personally I think we might end up with an uneconomical solution as these units need to be bought , fixed into to mesh the present system with alterations.
Hence I would advice you to check up with a gas grill before the present alerrations can be made as you can barter this one to get some returns than to tamper with and losing originality ,depreciating the actual value( of such a amazing unit).
So take this as a suggestion before you start buying the grill
burners , pipes and lines to be fabricated into the present. one.
You must cut the inner tray to fix with the correct spacing for the flame to grill. The bottom pipes must be covered in glass wool so that to prevent any heating on the supplied gas.
The pipes and fittings must be plumbed without any leak, check with pressurised air .
Visit the gas stove accessories shop to get the details of the grill burners that can be universally fitted. If possible there is a kit it becomes easy for you to set it in but try to get the whole assembly than to buy bits and pieces and end up with bad flame and performance.

Judge after you check with models and prices presently available while keeping this untampered , it might be helpful some time into the future.

Why southbend temp various over the grill ? set on same settings but will be hotter in spots

This uneven heating is something "grillers" have dealt with since we started cooking...the heat is higher directly over the source and gets progressively cooler as you move away.. This is more pronounced with gas or electric grill/cookers..because the heat source is in a fixed position...WITH charcoal, you can spread the coals out (if you use enough).. and get even heat over a larger area.... I have a NEW 4 burner(w/hot pad) Charbroil gas grill and a old Charbroil charcoal grill...I HAVE NEVER used the gas grill...and I grill 1-2 times a week!! ..(it was a gift/two years ago.... wanna buy it?)

Have charcoal grill/small smoker. burned the meat in the small smoker. Do i put meat on the grill side and use the small smoker for charcoal and wood chips only? my grill did not come with a manual

It depends on whether your trying to smoke the meat or grill the meat. You can't do both at once.
If you want to grill the meat, don't even fool with the smoker part. Put the charcoal in the grill side, light it and allow it to get white hot, before putting the meat on to sear it on both sides first, before moving it to a cooler part of the grill to finish cooking to your likeness.

If you're trying to smoke meat or whatever, you use only the smoker side for heat and smoke. By, usually using some type of hardwood, like Oak, Mesquite , Pecan. etc. However, the meat or whatever you want to smoke, goes on the grill side (No charcoal required under it), because smoking is a low heat (200 - 225 degrees F) slow process. Any where from a couple of hours up top 8 hours, depending on what and how much you're smoking. It's often referred to, as "Low & Slow."

Hope this helped you to better understand how a combination grill-smoker works. Once you do a little receipe research and get the hang of it, you'll really enjoy it.

I was looking for the manual for the Char Broil "charcoal" grill, not the gas grill...

Unfortunately, the model number you listed is for a gas grill. There is not Char-Broil Charcoal Grill, that comes even close to that model number. If may have been discontinued. In any event, contact Char-Broil Customer Service 866-239-6777. If there's a manual available, the will email it to you.

Sorry for the confusion, but I based everything on the Model Number you provided.

Grill worked fine for almost a year but I recently used charcoal following the directions in the manual (and it worked great). However since using it (& it is long gone), if I turn grill on high,...

Kathleen, the ash and debris left from the charcoal clogged the burners and caused the flames to shoot back thru the venturi valves, which is causing the flames to reach the control knobs. For the most part. I would suspect that the control panel, the electronic ignition, control knobs, the gas manifold for the burners and the burners are now completely shot.

Now, you're at the stage of determining is it worth it, to replace all the parts (if you can find them) and repair the grill. Since you didn't mention who the manufacturer of the grill is and how long you've had it. I have no way to tell how much it's worth. But, if it were me, and the grill is at least 5 years old and it originally cost $600.00 or less, I'd seriously consider replacing the gas grill with a new one. And if you want to do some charcoal grilling, get a separate inexpensive charcoal grill and take good care of it. During the weekday evenings when you don;t have time for charcoal grill to preheat, use the gas grill. On weekends, use the charcoal grill if you like.

Hope this helped answer your question and ultimately help you make the right decision.

Using ceramic briquettes with lp gas grill

Many people enjoy using Lp/gas grills for their ease of use and efficiency. Frustrations caused by flare ups and hot spots encourage the use of a wide variety of briquettes and other products. Ceramic briquettes are most commonly used because they provide an even heating surface and last for several uses.

  2. Gas grills most often use ceramic briquettes, lava rocks or, more recently, ceramic tiles in order to distribute heat. Ceramic briquettes come in the traditional shape, lava rocks are similar to those used in landscaping, and tiles only differ from briquettes by shape. Traditional charcoal briquettes can be used, though they maintain several disadvantages. Use
  3. Place briquettes, tiles, or lava rocks in a solid layer on a screen between the heating element and the grill surface, making sure to leave space for air to circulate. Light the grill and check to make sure that all areas of the heating element are covered, filling any empty spaces. Advantages
  4. Ceramic briquettes, tiles and lava rocks all serve the same purpose. The advantage comes from their ability to reduce flare-ups and hot spots. They can also be used several times, minimizing set-up and making cleaning easier. Traditional charcoal briquettes are cheap and easy to find. They also provide the smoky flavor associated with traditional charcoal barbecuing. Disadvantages
  5. Ceramic briquettes, tiles, and lava rocks are not as easy to find as traditional charcoal briquettes and are more expensive. Traditional charcoal briquettes do not repel run-off from food, but rather retain it, causing hot spots and flare ups. Charcoal briquettes also need to be replaced after each use and are harder to clean up. Warnings
  6. Any additional product placed inside a lp/gas grill should not come in contact with the heating element. Doing so can cause increased stress to the grill, as well as clog vital gas ports. Always maintain a clean grill. A buildup of old briquettes can cause inadequate performance.

Charcoal in a gas grill...Wassup with that?

Well are they lava rocks or charcoal? The Master Flame series is supposed to have lava rocks. If what you see is charcoal, remove it and replace with the lava rocks. You can order the rocks from Char-Broil's website.
