Hi,
That is very common...power surge....anyway you replace it by looking on the side for the "mfd" number and also the voltage like 370, 440, etc...of the cap. then buy a new one and install it... make sure to mark the wires and hookup the new one exactly as the old one was hooked up...Of course make sure to kill the power to the unit before attempting to repair it...also jumper the cap terminals before touching it to discharge the cap...

Fan on unit inside attic will only hum and will not start

Sounds like your capacitor has gone bad. Before working with any condensing unit, be sure to have all power disconnected to avoid injuries! Go to the back of your outside unit and look inside the access panel with the electrical warning sticker on it, if the capacitor is bowed up at the top, it needs to be replaced. If it turns out to be the capacitor, follow this link for a new capacitor replacement kit, it will save you hundreds of more dollars than calling an HVAC repair company to charge you an arm and a leg. The kit also comes with the proper tools and parts needed as well as detailed instructions on how to replace the part yourself. http://hvacrepairkits.com/index.php/content/article/68

Air conditioner was working fine yesterday and it will not kick on today.

This very well could be a capacitor issue, the run capacitor is what starts the fan in the outdoor unit. I have a mitsubishi VS-5043....It shuts off after approximately a hour of watching, can it be repaired?

Hello,

Yes, it can be repaired. There is so much heat inside the unit that is why it shuts off. When the heat gets high, then a component gets melted inside the unit.

The component that is most likely to get bad is a capacitor. Once a capacitor gets bad or melted, it begins to malfunction, like tripping off frequently, and other kinds of problem. Run a check on the power board and the main board for any bad capacitor and replace it with a new one.

Take care and good luck

Tv has a snapping or popping sound from a black capacitor in the center board. seems like electricty escaping. tv is on and working. the noise is intermittant in loudness and frequency

Hello,

You can replace the capacitor by opening the television with the appropriate instruments (screwdrivers), then you disconnect the board, make sure you take proper note of the steps of disconnection so as not to have problems with reassembling it back together, then you turn to the other side where you have the tips of the capacitor, melt it out with a soldering iron, and replace it with a new one.

Mostly, the lead on the capacitors tip might have melted off due to heat in the television, then the lead causes a bridge to other components on the panel thereby leading to sparking and popping sounds, which ever the problem might be, ensure the lead is properly cleaned up and the capacitor is properly fixed to the panel.

Good luck and take care.

Outside fan doesn't work. Inside it sounds like it works - there is a fan sound - but no cool air What part is broke?

If your compressor kicks on outside but the fan on top doesnt you need to ck the capacitor to the fan and the wiring to each. There is a schematic inside the elect panel on the outside unit it will give you an idea where the capacitor is it will be a silver or grey metal device with three wires coming out of it or you will have one small and one larger one with two wires coming out of each. the fan runs off a 5uf capacitor and the compressor a 35 uf capacitor. The most obviouse thing will be burnt or melted wires inside the elect panel when a capacitor goes bad it usually takes wiring with it. If wiring looks good buy a new motor and replace the capacitor at the same time. take the elect motor with you so it can be matched up.
