Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

1 Answer

BACKGROUND: Purchased several Western Digital Hard drives in 2TB, 1TB sizes. These drives have the "Smart Ware" application allowing for password protection. After formatting for the mac computer and setting up the software and drive, I transferred several large multimedia files. PROBLEM: After restarting my computer, the external drives are no longer writeable. Initially, I received an error message stating that my system cannot repair the drive, and I should reformat asap. When the Smart Ware application starts, I see another error message stating that I do not have a writeable (external) drive. I may open and view files, yet I can no longer write to the drive. All applications on external hard drive work fine. ACTIONS TAKEN: 1. Used Disk Utility to Verify drive. The drive could not be verified. Disk Manager stated the external drive had an invalid key length and could not be verified completely. The disk needed Repair. After clicking "Repair", I receive a message stating Disk Utility cannot repair the disk. Backup and reformat. 2. Backed up, reformatted external disk 3. Transferred files to external disk 4. Transfer successful 5. Restart---Back to initial error message about un-writeable drive. 6. Used Drive Genius 2 to attempt repair. Failed 7. I have talked to WD support. After using Disk Utility (again) I was advised to plug the hard drive directly into the wall socket rather than use a surge protector. I disconnected all peripherals with the exception of the mouse and keyboard. No hub. I reformatted a second time, same problem. I initially thought this was just a problem with the 2TB drive, yet the 1 TB had the same problem. I now suspect some sort of conflict with Smart Ware. All previously purchased Western Digital external drives (without Smart Ware) work fine and without incident. COMPUTER INFO: I have two mac computers, both running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard.--iMac, Intel Duo Core, 2.4 GHa. Bus speed 800 MHz, 320 GB Hard drive. --MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Duo Intel Core. Bus speed 800 MHz, 160 GB Hard drive. Both computers has the internal hard drive formatted HFS+ Journaled. The S.M.A.R.T. status is verified. BROWSERS: I use several different Browsers, Firefox 3.5, Camino 2.0.4, and Safari 5.01, and Opera 10.53. I use Firefox and Camino most often. I rarely use Safari or Opera. UTILITIES: 1. Intego Virus Barrier X6, version 10.6.7, also NetUpdate ver 10.5.4, and Washing Machine ver 2.0 2. Clean App version 3.4.1 3. Maintenance 3.7 4. MacTuneUp version 3.6.0 5. MacScan version 2.7

Hello.

Run the Western Digital diagnostic utility on your drive to determine if there are hardware problems with your drive.

Hope this helps.

My jvc smart tv wont recognise my new western digital hard drive

Digital tvs are good at this. I had to buy a digital converter box to pick up over the air channels with a usb port on it, to play mine, you can pick up one on amazon for about 30 bucks. Make sure it has usb streaming port before you buy it!

I've forgot the password for my 500G western digital my passport. How can i unlock the hard drive without formatting it? I still want the data in the drive because there are very important data in my...

my dear ! I'm really happy cuz i hv done it in just 4 to 8 minutes !!
I'm so happy to tell u that ! u should just update ur wd device system system >>>

You can format your Western Digital drive .first you connect your drive with the computer. Now when the drive prompts you for the password then you enter any wrong password five times. Then you will be prompted to erase the existing drive. If it doesn't prompt to unlock the drive then access the Western Digital smart ware Cd and in the unlocker button double click it.I hope this if you follow this solution your problem is over.

I bought a "My DVR Expander" to use with my DirecTV HD DVR. Does Western Digital make this expander in anything larger than 1TB? If so, where can I buy one?

Note that your DVR will treat this as "extra" storage, i.e., supplemental to its "internal" storage.

A 1 terabyte hard drive allows you to record:
  • Up to an additional 600 hours of Digital TV
  • Up to an additional 120 hours of High Definition TV
Since the largest EIDE/PATA disk-drive is 0.5 TB, the disk-drive inside the Expander must be a SATA disk-drive.

So, disassemble the unit, disconnect the SATA disk-drive, and pay about $300 to buy a "2000Gb Western Digital Caviar RE4 Raid Edition 7200RPM 64 Mb Cache 3.5 7200RPM 64 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD2003FYYS".

Connect the disk-drive to its interface.
Close-up the case.
Connect your "custom" PVR expander to your DVR,
and see if your DVR will recognize the 2TB of disk-storage.

I just purchased a My Book 3.0 IT DOES NOT START UP

I found my MyBook didn't work on my Dell laptop. I had to plug it into my desktop and format it before it would work on my laptop.

Is there any way you can try connecting your MyBook to a different computer? See if you can format it on a different device and then try your laptop again.

You can try installing the Western digital smart ware via the CD provided with the drives or the Western Digital site. In many cases, this will allow older computers to recognize the drive;

I am having a problem copying large mkv files from a WD 2TB mybook to another WD 2TB mybook. they are both formatted to NTSC. I had no problem loading the first drive but the second one is giving me fits!

In order to fix this problem, be sure that the drive is formatted to NTSC. Mine was, however, when I started loading mp3 files to the drive first, it somehow got reformatted to FAT32. I don't know how, but it did. Copy your mkv files FIRST!
