Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

My BK6EL 6kg capacity washing machine fills up with water, washes the clothes and drains the water out. But when it tries to spin at the end of the cycle it isn't able to do so. It stays on the spin setting, sounding like it's trying to build up speed, but doesn't/can't spin. If i don't manually turn off the machine it will stay in this mode for hours. Without the spin cycle, my clothes always come out dripping wet. It only started doing this a couple of weeks ago, and worked fine before then.

The machine is actually a Baumatic top-loader, and i've checked the hinge around the opening to make sure everything is in place etc. So thanks for your answer but it must be something else! Any other ideas?

  • jess_coops Sep 13, 2010

The door magnet isnt the problem, because when the machine is in the spin cycle, it still automatically stops when i open the door. Then when i close it, the machine starts up again. So it is able to sense when the door has been opened, meaning the magnet is still in place. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi again - our washing tub doesnt have one of the impellers that sticks up in the middle, its just a big tub. I can't identify what the impeller is; any tips? And if its not a problem with the impeller, do you have any other suggestions?

It is a safety feature of every front-loading machine not to advance to the high speed spin cycle unless the door lock switch is activated and the door is locked. A front -loading machine spinning slowly is a symptom of a malfunctioning door lock and switch assembly. Check to make sure that the door lock and switch assembly connections are all good. But commonly the door lock and switch assembly is the problem and replacing it is the only viable solution.

Then check the lid switch instead. you may not see the lid switch physically because it is under the top cover and activated by magnet in the lid. You can actually hear it click when the lid is closed or when a strong magnet is placed over it. The lid magnet may be dislodged from its place and result in the lid reed switch to activate. Place strong magnet to make sure this is not and issue with the lid magnet. You have to pry the cover up to access and check the switch any obvious damage to wires and terminals if placing the strong magnet over it does not make it activate.

The next thing to check now is the drive system itself. Newer top load models use a special type of direct-drive motor which directly attaches to the bottom of the tum and directly drive the agitator and the basket during spin while others still use a drive belt. Check first the wash impeller by lifting it out of the basket to see if something is stuck under it. Remove the impeller cap and remove the securing bolt then lift the impeller out. Lifting the basket lifts the impeller and makes the impeller to be lifted more easily.

The one that sticks up in the middle is the agitator while a wash impeller is the one at the bottom of the basket and turns back and forth to make a washing action.

Hot water stops filling too soon.

Fill setting has to be adjusted and the belt is slipping on the spin cycle and not generating enough centrifugal force to get the water out.

Machine will not spin or drain water.

I have a problem with my MW512AU. Sometimes it drains after wash cycle, but sometimes it sticks when it goes to spin, doesn't get up to speed, water comes on for about 10 seconds and shuts off, and it tries to spin again. If I hit the wash progress switch it goes directly to final spin and works ok. I then have to run a 2nd wash cycle to rinse the clothes. I also noticed a buzzing sound when I turn on the power point, which lasts about 3 seconds before stopping. It will come back on every 3-4 minutes for 30 seconds. This is with the machine power switch off. It powers on normally.

Will fill and drain, not agitate or spin though

I am having the exact same problem with the same brand machine.  I put in a load of clothes to soak till the morning, but in the morning, the washing machine would only fill, spin, and drain.  The agitator would not wash the clothes, so they came out with the soap of course still crusted in.

10yr whirlpool toploader wash machine no spin/agitat. but works?

When the clothes are wet at the end of a cycle, check these:

Motor coupler
Spin cycle
Siphoning
Water-inlet valve
Motor coupler To test the motor coupler, re-start the washer in its spin cycle. Let the machine run for a minute, and then open the lid and notice whether the tub is spinning:

  • If it's spinning when you lift the lid, the coupler is fine.

  • If it isn't spinning--and your machine was produced by Whirlpool®--you may have a broken coupler. Many Whirlpool-made washers use a small, relatively inexpensive device called a motor coupling. This plastic-and-rubber component is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. When that happens, you need to replace it completely.

Spin cycle If the washer doesn't reach its proper spin speed, the clothes may be too wet at the end of a cycle. Check to be sure the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again. If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt (Maytag®), a worn clutch (GE®/Hotpoint®), or a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component.

Alternatively, there could be clothes caught between the inner and outer tubs. Read the "It spins but won't pump" section of the "It won't drain" section. Also, there could be other things that cause friction on the drive train. Seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

Siphoning If the water that pumps from the machine goes right back into the machine after the spin cycle, it may be because your washer is siphoning the water from a laundry tub with a slow drain, back into the washer. Try to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is there something stuck in the drain?) Also, be sure the drain hose doesn't reach more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub. If it does, cut off the excess.

Water-inlet valve Water-inlet valves eventually fail. One problem that may develop with a water-inlet valve is that it can no longer completely shut off when the electricity is turned off to it. Then, the valve may leak and drip water into the clothes tub--you may notice that your washer has water in it when you haven't used it for a few days. To fix this, replace the valve.

Doesn't spin the clothes

take rear panel off, disconnect plug and socket electrical connections to motor and remove belt. undo bolts that hold motor and remove. check motor brushes as this is the most likely cause of the fault
